7/6/2008 10:01:00 AM Residents being questioned in teen's fatal fall from window
By LESLIE GRAY and GRETCHEN ROBERTS For The Athens Messenger MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.- Authorities in Myrtle Beach, S.C., have confirmed that Hocking County residents are being questioned in the death of Corey Kissling, 18, who fell from a sixth-story hotel window there, days after graduating from Logan High School. According to Detective Carol Allen of the Myrtle Beach Police Department, polygraph examinations will be administered to Kissling's friends who were with him when he fell. Allen noted, however, this does not necessarily mean his friends are suspects, but that law enforcement is simply trying to find out what happened. "We've interviewed a few people from Logan. We're just trying to cover all bases until everyone involved is comfortable with the outcome," Allen said. "We're investigating and interviewing and re-interviewing." According to Allen, the names of Kissling's friends involved in the incident will not be released until the case is closed. "Some of the witnesses were Corey's friends and some were bystanders who may have been staying at the hotel on the same floor. We interviewed everyone on the sixth floor," he said. Although no witnesses from Logan were named on the original June 13 police report, 12 people from other locations throughout Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina were named as witnesses to the incident. Several rumors have circulated throughout the Logan community, as well as the Myrtle Beach area, about the circumstances surrounding Kissling's death. While much of it is speculation at this point, some facts are known. It is known that Kissling was staying in a Sand Castle Resort with at least three other people when he fell from a window at the end of a hallway in the hotel. Authorities, however, are still trying to discover why he fell through the window. According to Allen, the window Kissling fell through was capable of withstanding wind gusts of 50 miles per hour. Shattering upon impact when Kissling fell through it, the window left several glass pieces that were gathered from the scene. Allen said the pieces are being sent away for analyzing. "There are different variances on what would cause that window to break," Allen said. Kissling died of head and chest injuries sustained from the fall. He was pronounced dead at the scene at about 8 p.m. June 11 by Horry County Coroner Robert Edge. "We don't know why he went through the window," Edge said. "We don't know if he tripped or fell or what. We're assuming it was an accidental situation, but the police are conducting an investigation and interviewing witnesses." Investigators searched the room in which Kissling was staying, and alcohol, specifically beer, was found. However, since the toxicology report has not yet been completed, it isn't known if Kissling had consumed any. Toxicology results will not be released until the end of July or beginning of August, Edge said. Another group of Kissling's friends was kicked out of the hotel the same day Kissling died. A 17-year-old Logan male, who had just graduated, was cited for disorderly conduct after throwing a chair from the 15th story into the pool below on June 7. The boy later pled guilty to the charge, and was sentenced to time served, after spending one night in jail. The first group of young people, which included Kissling, was not required to leave the hotel after the chair incident, however. According to Allen, "They weren't kicked out, but the police did respond to the hotel." Kissling, a Hocking County resident, was the son of Dave and Jodi Donaldson and Chris and Betty Kissling. He was a Division II first-team All-Ohio linebacker for the Logan Chieftains last fall. "Everything Corey did, he did at 110 percent, and he could just melt you with his smile," said Kissling's mother, Jodi. |

I think Corey would not have wanted anybody to change because of this. I think he would have wanted us to carry on with our lives just as we would have if he were here. That's the kind of person he was. He lived his life to the fullest and would never begrudge anybody of that. His friends that "party" are no exception to this. I think if the tables were turned and this was not about Corey, but one of the other "friends" that were there, he would be here doing exactly what the rest are doing, which is whatever they choose. They don't need our permission to do anything. Hope you will all take a moment and say a prayer for his friends. They truly are a unique bunch of kids. They are the most giving and compassionate group of young adults I have ever had the pleasure of being around. They sure do take a bashing on some of these forums, and I just feel it is uncalled for. So...if you find the time to remember them for a moment, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Just popping on here to move it up the line on the column :)

I know that we don't hear much about the rest of Corey's friends, so I was actually speaking of them. There were over 300 students in his graduating class alone and many friends from out of town. When I said his friends take a bashing, I was talking about the comments about partying, drinking, bad parents etc. I didn't mean to step on anyone's toes. We ALL know who makes these rude and uncompassionate comments. Sorry if I left that impression. It was not intended to offend any of the sincere friends on this forum. It was a thought I had at the moment and decided to share it. |

It's the unknown. It just has a way of bringing out the best in people. We are all curious by nature, and when we aren't provided with every last detail, we tend to act out in an undesirable manner. The investigation is going forward full force. I don't think anybody is beating down the door of MBPD wanting to tell them what happened. Unfortunately, they will have to do the leg work! It just takes time.
However, we do appreciate the posts to keep this on top! Thanks. |

Good Morning, I know Corey's friends are probably hurting. This will haunt a lot of them forever. I feel horrible for the friends and witnesses there that night. I hope they are getting some help. |

Good morning everyone. You have to forgive me. I strayed over to another forum I just found last night and it appears satan and all his little helpers live there. So, I have deleted the sight off my listing. I don't want to go down that path anymore. I am tired of the hate and judgement. It is quite unbelievable. Anyway, I hope you all are having a good morning. You know, I have never in my life been in a forum. Now, it seems I have become an expert at this, thanks to you guys. It is good to have friends.

Good morning Chris & Betty!
I HATE waking up to such negativity! I'm a quiet person in the morning, as a rule. But some mornings, I just can't control myself!!! My goal for the rest of the day is to be productive and not let "words" without value interrupt the beautiful day the Lord has given us, so that we may continue to seek the answers that Corey's family and friends deserve. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Hugs to you both. |
