I think the indians have enough casino's and make enough money as it is. Wouldn't you like to never have to work your whole life and just sit back and relax while your tribe makes you $85,000 a year? It's totally unfair! All casino's do is steel our money for them to spend on their new hummers and long vacations that I should be getting for working my ass off.

This is insulting and arrogant. The Tribes who held hands with their commercial casino cronies to effectively torpedo Horse Racing in Michigan now buy the racetrack. How despicable can things get? Evertime we turn around its another tribal casino in Michigan while racing in this once great State gasps for air and is on life support. Voters were duped by the Indian dollars a few years ago THINKING that gambling was being curtailed when in fact the truth is now being shown - the Indian monopoly is running wild while racing is in the tank. I live in west Michigan, I was a regular at the track, I love racing....will I spend a buck at a new Indian Casino - NO WAY!

One more thing - and I've floated this idea before.....I think it would be great if our Legislators would authorize TOLL BOOTHS on every road leading into a Tribal Casino. Charge a fee of say $20 per car and put the money into the Road Maintenance Fund.....Michigan would end up with the best roads in the country. After all, the casino's don't own the roads, the State, County or Townships do so why not charge a toll if the final destination is a Casino?

AMEN!! Not to mention how many economies that horse racing supports in Michigan. The Indians continue to pull the loin cloths over everyone's eyes in this state. Tons of empty promises, and once they're in the door, they could care less about anything except themselves. Look around Mt. Pleasant, for example. Once you get away from the Indian compound out there, the rest of the town is a hole. And the Indian compound isn't anything to write home about. This is after all the promises of "giving back" made by the Indians to get the casino in the first place.

And now, they will tell Aunt Jenny that they have a right to the property that used to be known as Great Lakes Downs, along with a HUGE promise of jobs etc., going to spur on the Muskegon/Fruitport economy. Jenny will hand them the keys inside of a day, to make herself look good. Meanwhile, as you plunk your first nickel in the slot machine, think about all the area farmers and horsemen and women who provided feed, labor, etc. to GLD.

Hence the term, "Indian giver"

They can't "steal" your money if you don't walk in. If you feel so poorly that you can't get similar toys - then you need to do something about ditching your minimum wage job.

Get over it horse lovers. The GLD failed, no one came and watched the ponies.

Would you rather have the land become vacant?

I wish that we could come up with some business for that area that actually creates, builds or manufactures something rather than a stupid service that really doesn't add anything valuable. Honestly...I've never been to a casnio but what do they REALLY positively contribute?

HMMMMM,
Entertainment is cool but really..what do casinos actually contribute long term? Please don't tell me that it's jobs for the area. I'm talking about long term business that positively contributes to American culture...or is this where American culture is heading? When I was a kid we were taught about the honor of the American Indian culture. They were and are the original conservationists. I'm sorry to say that the first thing that comes to mind now when someone says "Native American" is casinos, free college and special privledges. Nothing about the positive stuff. If I were of American Indian descent I'd be embarassed by casinos. By the way, I was born here...I'm a native American....

First off, Entertainment is what it provides, just like a movie theater, just like Craig's Cruisers, just like MI Adventure.

And, although you told me i couldn't say it - do you think they import people from out of state to work at a casino? Yes, deny it - but people do have to work there. Dealers, waitresses, bar tenders, security, etc.

Moreover, my firm (a firm in GR) is going to be bidding on some jobs. If I get those bids, then my company will have to hire people.

I can not answer this question:
"positively contributes to American culture..."

Because the word "positive" is subjective. I can say that entertainment is positive and so are jobs.

You can tell me that gambling is a sin and not positive. It's all relative.

I would say, American culture is free market and making money. If the casino is successful, it's because of a need or want. If it's not, oh well.

And lastly, when i go to Indian Casino's, i don't see Indians' gambling.

I think it's irony at it's best. In the beginning the white people were screwing the indians out of goods and money, not the indians are getting paid by white people.

And, if there is ever a ethnic group in the US that could us some extra funding like this, it's the Native Americans. ANd what's better, our taxes aren't paying for it!

Yes, I would rather the land sit vacant. It will never happen. All they will do is put another g.d. mall there, destined to fail the way all malls do, and the Lakes Mall will. They should just call it "Restaurant Row". True, GLD shot themselves in the foot by not advertising that they were open for business. I spoke with many, many couples and families that said "We never knew this place even existed." Yes, it is their own fault. Not allowing slots and video poker was their final nail in the coffin.

To answer your other question...how does the state lose money?

Simple...We elected and re-elected Jennifer Granholm.

I really hope all of these casinos do great .But I will never set foot in one .I can find a lot more ways to throw away money and have a better time than sitting in a stinky room with a lot of noise and drunks.

Daily Horoscope for December 26

Scorpio

Something that you've always taken for granted or believed implicitly could have a big question mark hanging over it during the next few weeks. The more entrenched your views are about this, the more difficult it will be to accept that perhaps it's time for a change of opinion or, at the very least, a revaluation of what you think. Mercury turns retro in your house of communications, so do your best to be open-minded now.
