This has always been a problem at Christopher with COACHES and STAFF. Started years ago with Max Mc Donald and Forest Moreland, Rick Cook, John Kretz ect.............Should I also add that present super Richard Towers is rumors to ALSO recently got a DUI. I could go on and on. To fit in here you had to be a big time drinker, as that is all they did after practices and games. They would all drink and drive. There was also always rumors of some have relations with females students as well. Maybe this will be an end to this crap and the community and SCHOOL Board will open their eyes and do something about it.

The good old boy club is very strong in Christopher. I think a few higher up club members have shot themselves in the foot by defending the coach. I hope there is more to come from the states attorney's office. The kids need better role models than stoned drunks ! He should have been put on administrative paid leave till the issue was resolved.

Kudos to the trRICKster ! The teacher's union is too strong and deserves to be brought down a couple of wrungs. The teachers should be drug tested regularly !

Will he have a new job at school as the drug coach?
The man is controlled by substances and not in control of himself.
He should resign and apologize to the community and get into a substance abuse prison.

I live in Christopher and the teacher in question teaches my son's PE class. He is still teaching after all this happened and my son as well as the other kids are confused. The school needs to explain this (good or bad) to its students !

The thing is that the new administration is cracking down on student discipline yet are not holding the same standards for their faculty. I realize that tenure and the union basically create a forcefield around teachers but COME ON! There was not one parent at the Board Meeting when the decision was made to accept his coaching resignation. If the parents TRULY cared about their children they would make a BIG stink about this instead of letting the "good ole boys" just let it slip on by.

What happened to ZERO TOLERANCE? There is NO zero tolerance, it just depends on who you are. What is the price a kid would pay for these same charges..........guess it is the ole double standard !

Zero tolerance doesn't mean a person loses their job. It refers to underage drinkers losing their license. For those who are calling for Gary's job (or worse) I say let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
If Gary is willing to make an apology to the school, enter (and complete) a rehab program, think of the powerful witness he could provide our youth once he becomes rehabilitated. He could speak first hand of losing the thing most dear to him (coaching) because of his mistakes. This can be turned into a positive in this young man's life, as well as the students he teaches.

I don't believe I said anything about losing a job, you did !!
There are degrees of punishment for zero tolerance, nothing is really ZERO tolerance or at least it is not enforced.

IF is the big word there. The thing is, he is a teacher and WAS a coach. Young people, especially the young men he taught looked to him as an example. I agree with the stone throwing. Everyone makes mistakes (even if they continue to repeat them). Be a man, say you're wrong, apologize and let these kids know that IS NOT the way to be. I can bet it will never happen!!! Doing that would admit guilt. So the message remains to our young people.... "Go ahead smoke pot and drive, or even drink and drive. JUST DON'T GET CAUGHT!"

There are way too many people who just get slaps on the hand instead of the punishment they deserve because of the system. It is wrong !! ANYONE who gets a dui and is caught with drug paraphanalia should be punished according to the law, especially when they are kids role models.
I'm very sure the man is sorry, but he got caught doing something he shouldn't have and he is an adult who is teaching high school age kids. What does that teach the kids? There are way too many people out there who have gotten away with this type of behavior because of the system.

I have followed this situation through the southen illinoisan. I've been amazed that the media has really spent a great amount of time and effort on this story. Now to my point, why hasn't the scott way story made the southern illinoisan yet? Or did i miss it.

Both of these stories deserve coverage. Both of these coaches deserve to be removed from working with kids. There are enough screwed up kids. They don't need help with these kind of role models. But comparing the two, I think getting caught with stuff to sell drugs is a lot worse than the diu and a couple of joints.
