Attorney general looks into gas prices

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office is looking into whether rising gas prices across the state are a result of Hurricane Ike, or gas gouging by station owners.

Did anyone see on the news where a church gave a donation to a gas station so people could get their gas a dollar cheaper untill donations run dry? That was nice. You would think that maybe the owner of a station here in Benton would think of doing that. Ha!

Hurricane Ike hadn't even hit the US at the time, and gas prices were way up over night.

One more time, kids: when the supply is adversely impacted, the retail price has to go up so that stations can afford to buy their next shipment, which they always find has just gone up in price.

Everytime the price goes up, politicians go through the dance of investigating price 'gouging' or 'price-fixing' and they never find any - because the price is driven by basic laws of supply and demand.

So when supply is more than adequate and demand is down, prices should go down as dramatically as when they go up, since to next shipment of gas will cost less....and it don't happen! FO!

Bottom line is this - if you want lower prices, lower the demand or increase the supply.

Demand HAS lowered over the last year and yet the prices have not come down accordingly, maybe some, but not that much. As far as supply, tell that to the Arabs and oil companies, we have NO control over them. We have started doing our part as far as using less. Now it is THERE turn to increase supply, which will never happen. Too many rag heads want more golden toilets, they WANT the supply low.

The odds are good that you are part owner of an oil company - if you are in any mutual funds or diversified 401K, you probably own shares of oil company stock.

Demand destruction didn't begin to occur until around the middle of July, when Crude Oil hit $140/barrel. Having two Hurricanes hit the Gulf Coast where many of the United States Refineries are didn't help our cause.

The 18 billion dollar profit that one oil company made last year doesn't help us either. Maybe they should invest in the people who gave them that profit instead of keep taking more and more from us.

To adequately gauge profits, you need to consider return on investment, how many shareholders are sharing in the prosperity, etc.
Profit creates jobs, investment, exploration and expansion of business. You should buy some shares and become part owner if you aren't already.

I don't invest in individual stocks, but I am in a lot of funds. There is a good chance I am part owner of Big Oil.
The left used to complain about the Big 3 automakers making too much money. You don't hear that so much anymore. Maybe they weren't as invincible and monopolistic as people charged.

The problem is that we can lower our demand, which will lower prices a little bit, but the global demand for oil doesn't change a whole lot, even if we do that. China and India have increased their demand for oil in a huge way the last 10 years. Oil is not ever going to be cheap again, like it was back in the mid-50's and 60's.

$2.79 in T'ville. Who would have ever thought we'd get below $3.
