New state law supports nursing mothers at work

Women have been nursing for generations. I nursed while I worked. I pumped milk on my own time and stored in my refridegerator. I think it's great that there are still women who want to nurse. But, I don't think the rest of society needs to pay them for it. Forcing Businesses to provide additional room, storage facilities and additional breaks to pump, is going to increase the cost of products and have a lag in performance. We all have breaks and lunch hours. That's when I pumped. That was my time to do what I choose with my life. Why should pumpimg mothers get special treatment? If a breal at 11am, lunch at 1pm and a break at 3pm isn't enough time before you get home at 6pm, then the mother should consider staying at home until she has weaned the child. If you plan to have a baby, you plan for the expense. If you plan to breast feed, you plan for the expense. It is a personal choice to breast feed and shouldn't be impossed on others.

It amazes me how so many people are hurting financially and yet willing to carry the burden of our tax dollars for programs to be instituted by government. Are Laws like this the reason we raised the Indiana tax rate to 7%?
Why don't we spend the money on transporting Illegal Alliens instead? This is a law already on the books. It's a sad day in the good ol US of A when a legal citizen can't get a local city job because we don't speak Spanish! Stop nurturing the small interest groups and start taking care of major our problems. Stop the chain of Illegal Immigration. Go to NumbersUSA.Com , and let your voices be heard. |

Of course mothers want to stay home with their babies. I asked why stay at home parents don't get a tax credit and never received answers. This would be why those mom's who can't afford to stay home, go to work.
A pump is noisy and if you work with ignorant people you don't want them "knowing" what you are doing in the bathroom....and....depending on where you work some bathrooms are just gross. A Mother needs to pump if she is away from her baby and there isn't going to be a big increase in production costs because a closet is set up for lactating Mom's. Get real. It is sad laws have to made for things like this but obviously people don't get it so the law has to be written. |

One more reminder....it take 20-30 minutes to pump, do you want someone taking up the bathroom time if you need to use it?

I am amazed and upset by your posts, Luvthenews and DHuston! I breastfed my children and I was fortunate to have an employer that allowed me to bring my child to work with me while breastfeeding, with a very reasonable 6 month time limit. It is very difficult to care for a crying child trying to help a customer or to be in my office feeding and have a customer request to speak with me. However, I now work at Purdue and have seen my co-workers struggle to find a private place to pump 3 times a day, EVERYDAY! I am so grateful for my previous employers kindness and I look forward to my new co-workers having a comfortable, private to pump. Please think about the future of our country before spouting your ignorance!

Hello? What did I say? I am extremely happy for the law and was defending it! What exactly did you read in my post that says I do not approve?
It is very stressful being away from you baby and using a pump and hoping for let down and hoping people don't hear you and know what you are doing and you just want to hurry but there is no hurrying and then you start thinking about your baby and how you should be cuddling and kissing it's forehead, but you should be back out at your desk doing your job and then you get more stressed and milk production goes down. I have nursed 7 babies. Don't tell me I am ignorant. I sure hope you get back on here and tell me what I said so I can clarify. Staying home is #1, bringing you baby to work #2 but those aren't possible for all people and those people need a place to pump, in private! period. So, there is a law, ok. Clean out a closet, bring in a fan/heater, a low lit lamp, a nice scenic painting and a rocking chair. |

Anyone that is against breast feeding is a true american.

Maybe I misunderstood your second post. I interpreted it mean that you opposed the lactating mother occupying space for 20-30 minutes at a time. You have clarified that you, in fact, are voicing support for having clean, private areas for these mothers. My apologies! |
