Dave wrote: This isn't a bad article, but no one seems to recoginze that Linux already exists to this same purpose, and hasn't even made a dent in Microsoft's market share. It simply runs as a 2nd OS on most machines, and isn't ready for the desktop/netbook market for the idiots. If Google can make an OS that will run out-of-the-box on these machines, and can gain widespread software support, they'll make it. Otherwise, they'll be relegated to exactly the same standing as Linux is now. You hit it right on the head: "isn't ready...for the idiots." Actually, Google already tried this once before with gOS, which was basically a stripped-down Ubuntu.

Open Source is the future of software, and one of the many reasons I'm glad to be retired after 26 years in the industry. Colleges are churning out boatloads of computer science graduates, with both training and ambition to write system software and core applications. Meanwhile, the actual number of paying jobs in these fields is declining due to outsourcing and the simple fact that the world might not really need a dozen new operating systems. "Programming" increasingly means using established tools and system programs to construct rather boring, repetitive applications. So where does a guy with a degree in systems software, stuck in a job maintaining websites or payroll programs, go when he wants to actually USE the stuff he learned? Open Source, that's where. True, it's a form of self-cannibalism, but it's the future. I'll be very surprised if in ten years we still have anybody collecting a paycheck for operating systems, browsers, office applications, etc... it'll all be done by Open Source programmers looking for something interesting to do with their educations...

I really really doubt that. As fast as the college kids are writting code, you still need a team to assemble it, test it and maintain it. Is anybody really going to maintain code for free? Not only that, but everyday computers are entering new fields with a demand for a new application. Something Open Source aids, but does not solve.

I liken it to being a good mechanic. If you are, you can maintain a Ferrari in your garage and keep it running well; however if all you want to do is commute, get groceries and take a few road trips, a Civic would serve you better. If you want to work on the computer and are good at optimizing it, then good on you. I don't. I want to buy something that works well with minimal maintenance, which has never and will never be anything that microsoft makes. Although I am computer oriented, you don't have to be if you're using Linux on an Asus EEE PC. It's easy to use, stable, and includes the best browser, Firefox - and OpenOffice, a suite of office programs compatible with and better than Microsoft Office. I also own several Macs.

If businesses don't buy into it -- which they won't -- it will not go anywhere but Linux users. Remember them? You don't know?
Then why risk your system and security for "FREE" -- if the Government get cyberattacked and looses - how secure do you feel with your "FREE" software.
Just ask the parents of the kids that downloaded malware that comprimized their systems.
This is just hype now - but don't go down the road you get something for FREE. We already are being threatened with FREE Healthcare - do you trust that?

i find it strange that people think linux is inferior to microsoft or apple. in fact it is the opposite if you want your computer to do what you want. don't be a chicken and run it on an old pc or something.

If it works like the OS they have on the G1 phone, then it will be great. If it works like Chrome then this is a lot of hype for a big yawn.

I now KNOW you don't have a job. Anybody that would think simply hurling some insults qualifies as a valid response to obvious points...well what more is there to prove. I'm sure Googles OS will simply materialize by itself since they have some snippets open source code.

Linux is superior, but keep in mind that in a typical corporate setting (MS's biggest market) or for an average uninvolved user, even a slight alteration in a desktop environment is a huge deal. A complete overhaul of the operating environment will require hundreds of hours of tech support alone, and is not going to happen.

Windows has been such a miserable operating system that I was hoping either the much better Mac OS X or Linux could replace it (but Windows is cheap and common, and so prevalent among early business adopters that we were all pretty much stuck with it as a necessary evil).
This is VERY interesting, and Google has made some excellent products that are right up there with Apple. While I do not care for Chrome (Firefox is still my favorite browser, followed by Safari), anything to get us away from Microsoft failures like Windows and now Explorer are most welcome.

I do not like Chrome, but it is better than Explorer (especially now that we all know Explorer has a huge security hole in it). Like others, Firefox and Safari are decent and personally my favorite.
Since Windows has been trying (and failing) to create a solid, secure, fast, and easy to use operating system like Mac OS X ever since the early 90s, it is a bit depressing that they still cannot deliver anything close to OS X or Linux.
Years ago, I heard executives at Microsoft state that Google was a much larger threat than Apple, and now their fear seems warranted. However, most large corporations, businesses, and the uneducated public still buy Windows PCs in overwhelming numbers and that will not change overnight.
