Well, I'm not big on Chrome for its simplicity, but it works great. Props to Google. The enemy of my enemy...

Except that Google is becoming the new "Devil" - just watch. Company has a serious agenda... |

Google doesn't really listen to it's users either. People have been requesting simple changes to their email system (like the way the bundle email threads) and their responses is always...'no, trust us, our way is best."

The title of this article needs to be changed quickly. It says this is a 'Windows replacement', but why is this not an Apple OS replacement? It is neither. It is a new OS that wants to compete with both MS and Apple, as MS and Apple and Google all run on the Intel and AMD chips.
No fair calling out MS and not saying Apple in the title. |
||||
Um, that would be because Apple makes the OS that runs on Macs (which they manufacture). They wouldn't load a Google OS on a Mac (unless you did it yourself after the fact). Google would really only be targeting computer manufacturers that have the ability to install something other than Windows. They are looking to have manufacturers pre-load their OS on the machines. |

Hope it is free.

I love all the idiots out there that hate Microsoft. I have worked with both companies as a developer and hands down Apple is the WORST bunch of anal idiots on the planet...and they want everything proprietary. How about taking them out?
Anyway, just want until Google 'locks down' a market of their own and a new generation of haters will surface to 'hate the haters'. As far as an OPEN SOURCE OS?...PLEEEEEZE! WHO is going to get paid? The people donating the free code or google or google and the share holders? |
||||

First, Microsoft has been named a monopoly and they own a large, really large share of the PC OS marketplace. So that it is proper to call this a challenge to Microsoft. Unfortunately its not. The niche would be either for the larger PDA that has enough horsepower to run their slimmed down OS/Browser or the netbook. Again a niche market. Google's philosophy is that the network is the computer and this is a second attempt to realize Larry Ellison and Scott McNeally's dream from the 90's.(Hardware has now caught up. Read: Lower power, more powerful CPUs and better battery life all in a smaller form factor.) Again do not trust google. They are *evil*. |

Who wants a two big-headed monster when you can have three? It is what it is, we now have some options as netbooks is concerned.

Wow, these Google people really are smart. I can just hear the conversations behind closed doors.
"Hey, why should we pay for developers? Let's take advantage of all of the Microsoft haters. They'll gladly work for free to develop our software. We won't have to pay them a penny and we can then make another few billion dollars and our stock will go up." |
||||
|
So I guess I'll be able to have a fairly fast netbook for basic functions without having to shell out the cash for 2 gigs of ram and a dual core 2 gig processor, as would be required to smoothly run vista (and I'm assuming Vista 2.0 aka Windows 7).

using the beta version , no complaints to speak of, but would like better choices when copying and printing. |

Lemme see if I got this right: You worked as a dev for both the Vole and the Toymaker, and you still don't understand the business model for FOSS? Last I checked, coders made salary; the base of the OS (Linux) is mostly done already...Who does Google have to pay again? |
|||
|
This isn't a bad article, but no one seems to recoginze that Linux already exists to this same purpose, and hasn't even made a dent in Microsoft's market share. It simply runs as a 2nd OS on most machines, and isn't ready for the desktop/netbook market for the idiots. If Google can make an OS that will run out-of-the-box on these machines, and can gain widespread software support, they'll make it. Otherwise, they'll be relegated to exactly the same standing as Linux is now.

so what? linux has been doing this for years. google btw, makes you use adobe to view youtube etc.. they really aren't your friend and are no better than ms.

Not exactly... Their devs are already on the payroll. Further, the OS will be Linux-based so they won't need to steal anyone else's ideas like MS or Apple do on a regular basis. |

|
I would be excited about this, but chrome is horrible compared to firefox.
|
||||
They aren't a better friend than microsoft, but at least they can make software that works. Microsoft can't make anything new that isn't ill-conceived, laid out poorly, and bug ridden. If my choices are a money hungry corporation that makes a product that works easily or a money hungry corporation that makes a junk product that constantly needs outside help to cobble together a semblance of functionality, I'll choose the former. Which is why I use a mac and am intrigued by this google OS. |

Linux is great if you're good with computers, but if you just want to surf the web, email and don’t run many games or programs, you don't want to learn code and programming. I liken it to being a good mechanic. If you are, you can maintain a Ferrari in your garage and keep it running well; however if all you want to do is commute, get groceries and take a few road trips, a Civic would serve you better. If you want to work on the computer and are good at optimizing it, then good on you. I don't. I want to buy something that works well with minimal maintenance, which has never and will never be anything that microsoft makes.
