Obama said things are getting better......or maybe this is an excuse to raise our taxes even further....either way, these are just more people I will have to compete against for the few jobs out there. I now work for $5.00 an hour, can you believe that?

As long as the legislature continues to play Russian roulette with the state budget, schools will continue to downsize, layoff staff and limit programs for students. There is no way to get around this problem.

Your ignorance is showing with your comments. It all comes down to the rediculous pensions that retired teachers receive. This is breaking the bank and that is why teachers are being layed off. Do your "homework" before you start spouting off on how the teachers are getting a raw deal. Retired teachers get 70% of their gross income, at time of retirement, taxed, of course, for the remainder of their lives. They also get full medical benefits for life. When they die, their spouse retains all existing benefits through their lifetime. And you wonder why our state is broke. This is also the same deal ALL other state employees receive.

It sad to see teachers have to give up their pay to help their younger teachers. Oh, wait this union eats it's young. Long live seniority over good younger teachers.

More reasons for parents to home school their children. Studies shows home schooled students achieve higher test scores, become better leaders, and excel in college. Parents also get a check from the state...look into it; there are other options beyond the failed, miserable public school system. The unions, bureaucrats, and the department of education (Washington DC) DO NOT CARE about your children.

It's bad that this is happening to this district. I can only imagine the higher number of students in each class as the high schools also in this area have already accostumed to. Unless the district had too many teachers in their schools? I know that the city that this district is in has been having people move out to other cities so maybe the population has decreased affecting the schools.

Someone should look into the reasons why the union turned down a package offered by the District in December that would have saved 55 jobs. I am a teacher in this district and after hearing this from many different people I am pretty sure the union dropped the ball yet again.

I don't know where you are getting your information, but I assure you it is incorrect. One furlough day saves 3.7 jobs. The district proposed 8 furlough days. Two for the 2010-11 school year. That would save 7.4 jobs. Then 6 for the 2011-12 school year. That would be 22.2 jobs. Take into account the 15 teachers that retired, plus the one that passed away. That's a total of 45.6 jobs within two years. The Union will propose 3 furloughs, which will save 11 jobs for the 2010-11 school year. That is only if the membership votes in favor it. I hope that helps.

If you have an issue with a teacher, why haven't you involved your parents and the school administrators? By the way, your spelling is terrible. You don't know where to capitalize. Maybe if you paid more attention to your teachers, your grammar wouldn't be so atrocious.

I just think a lot of teachers in the MVSD got to comfortable and now are paying the price. But one main reason for all of this, the population in el monte has declined, less students attend so there is no need for so many teachers at these elementary and middle schools.

Saving 45.6 jobs sounds pretty good to me. However, I could see why saving 11 jobs seems like a good thing to you, because you only lose three days worth of pay and do not have to worry about your retirement being reduced when you retire. The union takes care of its older members, which are the majority in the district. So do not worry about your retirement...just worry about the enormous class sizes you will have next year and how you will teach them. Wait...I am incorrect again. I will bet you are one of those teachers who are on the "10 year plan". So you really do not have to do much till that observation comes around. I have been in the district for awhile and I can promise you I am not "incorrect" about that.

Daily Horoscope for February 13

Gemini

This is a good time to take stock of your actions and the direction you're going in. Are your efforts getting you anywhere or leading you astray and scattering your energy? If you're putting in the work but not moving forward, you're not on track. The old adage 'cut your coat according to your cloth' is good advice. Be simple and purposeful and don't waste time with things that get no practical results.
