I live in Mt. Vernon, but my children dont go to school in Mt. Vernon because I'm fearful that they wont be able to learn for fear of being attacked or shot or harassed by gang members. Something serious has to happen - maybe stronger penalties for those caught with guns or any types of weapons. The age statutes need to be reviewed...the 14 year old of today is far more mature and advanced than the 14 year old of the 60s and 70s. If you do the crime, you should be held accountable for the crime. This is madness. From what I understand, the guy who was shot while holding his young son was involved in some mess earlier in the evening, and his shooting/death was retaliation. It's' not right that he's gone, but this is what our kids are growing up in now, and it terrifies me. I have two young boys and I worry about their future.
Mount Vernon has some beautiful homes and some beautiful people living here. Unfortunately, the not so beautiful people are running rampant and ruining the beauty of our city. We need help, and we need it fast.
I so do agree.
I took a 20 min stroll in downtown mt.vernon which I live in for 50 yrs and I counted over one hundred street lights that are out or mssing or broken.
Isn't that a public aafety risk or something? Who is in charge in this city? it is appauling !!! and The mayor should be ashamed. His honymoon is over. The streets and parks last summer never looked so dirty and disgusting. I an go on but It is a shmae.

Mount Vernon is not without struggles. It is a city with city issues. That said, it has somethings that other towns may not have. Beautiful homes, proximity to N.Y. city, lower taxes than many other Westchester communities, and quite a lot of very upstanding people that are tolerant and neighborly. There are many wonderful kids all over Mt. Vernon including in the high school, where I see most of the concern being raised in these postings. I love living here. And yes we could use some more programs, more money for our schools, etc.

I have read all the comments here and the truth of the matter is; One will always see his grass greener when on the outside looking in...with that said everyone has their opinion on our city based on what they have read or heard, which within in itself is a shame because the negative news is publicized more than the positive. Mount Vernon has had many years of improper managment. As we elected a new Mayor this year small changes have taken place, but it's gonna take so much more time to right the wrongs we (mt. vernon residents) allowed to happen. We have sat back and let elected officials tell us what our city should be like, steal money that was given for our youth and take away every program and positive influence that would take them off the streets. I am a Mt. Vernonite to heart and afraid to live in the city I was raised in. I hear a lot about what needs to be done, but not a lot about helping us achieve it. I do believe our city has a long way to go as to getting back to joyful living and having pride for where we live, but I also belive that others shoudl remember that no town is completely better than the other as each has it's own issues. As we continue to discuss the violence and dissappointments we have about the City of Mt. Vernon please remember that your words no matter how you put them may hurt the next reader as we each are sensitive to the place we call home.

My grandfather came to Mt. Vernon in 1895. Lived on E. 5th St. and Dunham Ave. My father was born on E.5th St. Grandmother lived on Bedford Ave.
My father lived here from 1909 to 1963, when we moved.
It was wonderful. No crime at all. You could leave your front door unlocked. You could leave your baby in her carriage outside the stores on Fourth Ave. The movies were great grand buildings: RKO on Gramatan, and Lowes on Stevens Ave. Also, the Beackman (I think) on E. 3rd St. and a cute little theater up in Fleetwood.

The schools were fine: AB Davis HS and Edison HS (where my father went). The trolleys I remember used to go up and down Sanford Blvd.

Wilsons Pool was the place to have fun on a hot summer day. I was an usher for 75 cents an hour at RKO in 1960. Also, delivered a hundred newspapers on Columbus Ave and Homestead. It was the best paper route in town in 1957.

It was a wonderful, beautiful town back then. Oh yes, both Mt. Carmel and Lady of Victory Church's had wonderful annual "feasts" (carnivals) every summer.

How sad it has gone downhill. It has lots of potential, being so close to Manhattan.

That was the "Embassy" on E. 3rd St.
Also the "Biltmore" on 5th Ave. near 1st St.

I also had a Argus route on 3rd and 4th ave. with 90 customers the same time period.

Yes Mt. Vernon was a great town, what happened?

I attened Sacred Heart School on 5th Ave.

Loved the "Feast",the Pool, the movies and as a
little "nipper" I would ride the trolley .

But I guess "change has come to Mount Vernon".
