I have a relative that works for one of news agency's in Lexington (don't want to say their name but it is one that is on tv) and he actually told me that they receive calls everyday of people getting bitten by dogs and never follow up on them unless they are a pit bull. He was telling me about 3 months ago a black lab attacked a 6 year old boy somewhere here in central ky and actually injured the kid bad enough to put him in the hospital and almost ripped one of his ears off. He said that they would not even report on it and his supervisors exact words was people don't want to hear about a lab attacking someone, if it had been a pit then they would report on it. Pits are not the blood thirsty killers that the news makes them out to be, yes there are some aggressive pits but there are aggressive dogs in every breed! Quit being so ignorant and hanging on to every word that you hear from the news, they are going to air the stories that are the most exciting and controversial and they do not care about the image they portray about who or what they report on.

I am a responsible pit owner and I have had 7 over my life time. Not one of them ever attacked someone or even nipped someone. None of those obeyed as well or had as good of a temperament as even my worst pit. In my experience pits are the best breed of large dog to have. If they are raised right and loved they will defend you with their life, they are playful, they are extremely smart and they are great with kids. Now if you are an idiot and beat on them and leave them on a chain all the time and never show them any affection other than bring them food once a day then that's when you have a problem! That's not just with pits, that's with any breed of dog. Pits get a bad rep because the news makes all of them out to be blood thirsty killers when only a fraction of them actually are and that fraction of them are treated the way I just explained. If anything the owners should be the ones punished and thrown in jail after an attack because they are the ones to blame. I'm not saying that the dog that done it shouldn't be killed because they should, but if the irresponsible owners of these dogs would start being thrown in jail for a few years a lot of the attacks would never happen because they would pay better attention to their dogs.

I love most all breeds of dog. I like larger breeds the most but there are some smaller breeds that I like as well. The only point I'm really trying to get across is no breed should be singled out and exterminated for what some of them do. That to me is like saying, African American men are more likely to serve jail time than white men, so we should just go ahead and lock them up.
