Ira Kleinmuntz must be mistaken if he thinks that Good Times Roll by the Cars was cranking out over the airways in 1978. That song was played on FM but not until the winter of 1979. The debut song from the album in August of 1978 was Just What I Needed followed by My Best Friends Girl in December of 1978. The debut album by the Cars peaked at #18 in March of 1979. It was a great album and unless he was cranking the album in his car, it was rare to hear that song on the radio.

Back in the summer of 1985 I was a student at SIU working in a liquor store with a top 40 station playing over our sound system. It got so that anytime that "Summer of '69" song came on people would scream. I remember many a time hearing people say, "Oh no not again..." when the opening would play.

When I think of summer music I think of Band Concerts in the Park. You can not have a concert in the park without some John Philip Sousa. If you are talking around the forth even though it has nothing to do with the War of 1812 between US and England The 1812 Overturn has become a standard 4th of July hit and the summer is never complete unless I play 1812 Overture at least once.

Summertime meant getting away from the poseurs and blasters into some peace and quiet. I was soooo sick of fellow students' ears bleeding from the volume they set so that everyone else could listen to what they thought was cool. Not only in class, but on the CTA too. Summertime was a bliss of quiet nights, days full of normal people sounds and not being forcefed competing drivel from every side.

On another note: I want a refund of my $.75 paid for Saturday's Tribune. I tried to use the TV guide but it was totally wrong. Saturday's listings were just blatantly, shamelessly, WRONG. And why do they break down all the 26.x stations but not the 11.x or 38.x stations? And why do they only show some of the 26.x stations and not the 26.6 one? How come they list 56 by not 13?

The Trib is sooooo screwed up.

Agreed
That one and "Summer Holiday" by Cliff Richard are a pair of classic, upbeat songs.

Never heard that Nat King Cole song before, but the man who wrote about that sure seems to know what he's talking about.

For those old enough to remember it, "A summer place" from 1959 was one of the most beautiful songs ever made.

Mary Dawson - You are absolutely right!

"Theme from a Summer Place" by Percy Faith & His Orchestra.
It really is one of the most beautiful pieces ever recorded. It is the perfect summer song.
