A Movie Theater That Did It Right

I remember many a Saturday at the Brookline Theater ($.25 double-features and $.05 popcorn!). The Suburban and Ardmore theaters in Ardmore were also 'special' treats with their $.50 Saturday movies!

I went to Msgr. Bonner my freshman year, then moved to Bryn Mawr and went to and graduated from Radnor in 1973. I grew up on Sagamore Road then later on Brookline Blvd across from Annunciation. Haven't been back much in recent years, but have fond memories of Havertown!

I remember going to the Saturday afternoon movies at the Brookline Blvd theater in the late 1940's. At the time I lived on Manor Road in Havertown and attended Annunciation School. Looking back they were great times.

I know Dick McCann and he is right when he says "Looking Back They Were Great Times". We talk about the B&W movies of yesteryear all the time and actually anything old, which includes cars, trains, movie theaters in 69th st. such as the Terminal and the Tower, if its old we talk about it, including Dicks old refridgerator from the 40's and it still works. I used to go to the Manor Theater in Norwood Pa. in the 50's .25 cents to see a picture and then it blew up in the late 60's and that was the end of the Manor

Wren is correct, we grew up in the Suburbs of Philadelphia but not near enough to go to the same movie houses etc. They were fun days and I'm grateful that the movies of that era are still around to watch and enjoy.

Ok all you old movie buffs on June 15,1941 here is what was playing at some of the theaters in Delaware County Pa. At the Waverly in Drexel Hill "Rage in Heaven with Robert Montgomery was playing. At the Tower in 69th street it was "Ziegfeld Girl" with Judy Garland. There was a double feature at the Boulvard in Brookline "In Old Cheyenne" and the "The great plane Robbery"

I remember BRookline and Ardmore. I saw Star Wars and Superman there when I was a kid.

Brookline was a small shopping center, completely outdoors and had a lot of traffic going through it. In the 1940's and early 1950's I was a youngster who's parents had no problem allowing me to go to the movies and/or teh soda fountain at teh drug store on hte corner nearest Darby Road.
Too bad todays kids have to have rranged "play dates".

There used to be two movie theaters in Darby Pa. Del. Co. the "Parker" and the "Wendy" can remember going to one of them in 1954 to see Disney's "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea". I can tell you it was a very exciting event for a kid back then, and guess what no movie ratings. I can also remember going to Darby to see "Snow White and the Seven Dwarf's" which was the original 1937 movie.

I don't think Morton, PA ever had a movie theatre but what they did have was what we now call "small town America". People knew each other, trusted one another, and offered a hospital welcome to whatever you we're shopping for. Groceries, ice cream, medicine, newspapers, bakery, bank, haircut, clothing, hardware, repair shops (remember them). All of this was a short walk up the street, no gas, no time lost in traffic, it goes on and on.

Yes Morton did have a movie theater back in the 1920's it was called the "Ideal Theater" it was located at Faraday Park where the the Morton Savings bank is today and the phone no. was Swarthmore 1135

This Building still has it's original marking on the top facade "Damon Hall" which is the Morton Savings and Loan as previously stated.

Do you think we can bring back the classic movie theater experience in Delco?

I lived at 222 Sagamore Road in Brookline from 1930 to 1951. It was a great time to grow up in the good area of suburban Philly. I remember the Boulevard Theater on Brookline Boulevard, Harry's barber shop, Kimmel's bakery, Hykel's tavern, Colson's drug store, etc. I went on to Haverford High School, Class of June, l945, and Saint Joseph's College, June, 1949. Let me know if these
commemts bring back old memories!

Stan - I grew up at 242 Sagamore Road from 1955 to 1967 then we moved to 412 Brookline Blvd, then to Bryn Mawr in 1970. Oh yeah! Many of those evoke great meories of a different childhood in the Philly 'Burbs!

Who can EVER forget the classic Hykel's Hoagie!! Or a crew-cut from Harry Paladino up on the Boulevard? My litle brother played for Coulson's Pharmacy in Little League (actually Penfield Civic Association youth ball). WOW!!!
