i am almost positive i know one of my co=workers is on drugs. but i don't know what kind of drugs. she does her job ok, but is taking her cell phone outside quite a bit. like she's into something secretive. most of the time her eye balls are really tiny and pin pointy and she itches quite a bit, rubs her nose a lot. but she does not look like these terrible looking meth mug shots you see on tv and does not act drunk or nervous or spedded up. excuse me for being naive, i've never smoked drank, or had any other drugs than what the doctors gave me to calm me down during a period or stomach aches or antibiotics and shots from a dentist and such.

How about mind your own business? Quiet vague descriptions of the signs. If someone raises an eye brow every time a phone goes outside, hell were all on drugs.

Does she pick at imaginary bugs on her skin or is she just itchy? Sounds like she is on hydrocodone or something similar. Opiate pain pills if her pupils are pinpoint.

Small pupils and itching usually mean pain pills (opiates).

It is my business because I hired her! We don't drug test our workers but we may soon have to, jerk!

Thanks for the fast responses, Dr Script and gridlock. She has been taking more breaks than usual and the itching seems to be getting worse. Her eyes are also glassy. So far she is doing an ok job but if she goes overboard with these outdoor breaks on the phone, we might threaten to have her drug tested.

Can you not drug test her? Randomly? If you don't have the authority to do it, go to someone who does. Having an employee under the influence of any drug is a train wreck you don't want to be a part of. What type of business do you work at? Her itching could be psoriasis or some other skin issue.

Don't threaten to drug test her! That's stupid. Just do it. If you threaten her, if she is on something, she will have enough sense to try and clean her system out. Does she have children? Could they be the reason for all the phone calls?

lf she has a prescription, there's nothing you can do unless she isn't doing her job.

Think about it, if she is high at work, you are paying for drugs. I don't say that to be mean towards you but doesn't that makes sense? You are giving her money every week to buy drugs and come into work and lollygag around stoned.
The very best thing you could do for her and your business is to drug test her and terminate her when the results come in as positive. Almost 80%(and that is a very conservative estimate) of people addicted to drugs will not try to stop unless they have dramatically negative consequences as the result of their using. And almost all drug abusers will use more and more drugs as their addiction is continuing.
In other words, the situation you mention is only going to get worse and worse.

We're not threatening to drug test her. She has never been in trouble, and no, she has no children. She didn't get itchy and redeyed until the Monday after her first paycheck. She gets paid every two weeks and it always seems worse the following week.

I don't know why my post are being judged as "clueless" and "nuts". Must be some other druggie judging them.

If you feel someone is on drugs you can either A- drug test them to make sure or B- quit talking about it. It's really a no brainer. Any one with any common sense would not have come to a forum, like Topix, to ask a question like this. If you're so concerned about what she is doing when she goes outside to talk on the phone then fire her. You don't have to have a reason. If you're so concerned about her state of mind and if she is on drugs, fire her. You don't have to have a reason. Coming to a forum and talking about it, is not fixing the problem.

lt sounds like another hydro or oxy case to me. Drug testing is the only option.

Has anyone stopped to think that if indeed this person is on drugs they could be legitimately prescribed? Also if taking a phone call outside means you are on drugs then I am beyond guilty of that!! I take some phone calls outside simply because I don't want certain nosey coworkers in my personal family business! It's not a huge deal for someone to take a phone call outside or in another room.

If you're trying to save her job or save her from the shame of a drug test, then talk to her (up close) and find out what she is in to. You might mention having a beer or getting high and watch her reaction. If her physical appearance (pin-point eyes/scratching) is looking suspicious, she may give away her secret by her expressions. A guilty facial expression is easy to spot !! Just sayin'.

It's a FACT that drugs impair a person's performance. If the person in question is looped on pain pills, then they are a liability not an asset.
Would you like your taxi driver to be high on pain pills while they take you across town? Would it be OK if they had a prescription for them?

Sounds to me like its oxycodone. I know this medication makes your pupils small, eyes glossy, and DEFINATELY will make the persons nose itch. They will wanna rub there nose a lot and may be sniffin alot like there nose is runnin or something! I use to be this way thats how i know

I'll bet if the OP mentioned that the business's insurance had decided to include drug testing for all staff, with an inital test being given within a week....that the eyes of the person in question would all of a sudden look normal the next day and thereafter untill the supposed date for the test.
