If these people call you up trying to give away a free one thousand dollar online shopping spree, hang up. This is nothing but a scam. They get your credit card numbers and overcharge. The Thousand dollar shopping spree is BS. it's things you can get at the dollar store, and they make you pay for the shipping and handling. Plus, they make you go into a verbal contract to buy 60 months of magazine subscriptions, which will end up costing you 1500.00 in the end. BEWARE if they call you. IMMEDIATELY HANG UP.

if these people are selling magazines, it's probably the same company that telemarkets them here. They are right down the street from the Merita store in that new building. Something "mountain". They always have a now hiring sign out front. It's not really what I would call a scam, bc they did tell you the $dollar amount for so many months. But they make it sound like such a good deal that you dont realize that 5 magazines over the next 3 yrs would cost so much. It is a contract & its really hard to get out of. But be persistant & you can. If all else, change your bank card.

How is it a scam? From what I gather they tell you the product...length of service...and the total charges. As I understand, they did in return send you the one thousand dollar online shopping spree for using their service...and they didn't use your credit card to obtain anything personal. Sounds to me your a bit disgruntled over the items available to purchase? Dollar store items as you put it so nicely…i agree with the above poster...you made an impulse buy and are now remorseful...just remember it was YOU who gave those numbers over the phone.

Mountain Area communications, yea they have a horrible record with the bbb. They are a boiler room sales operation. Get the card number at any cost, say whatever it takes, target those who don't know any better. They are being investigated by attorney generals in various states.

I also want to know how it is a scam?! If they call you & pitch you the script & explain everything to you, including the billing & how many months you are paying & the amount you are paying each month which part is a scam?! It seems like to me you are not thinking things through & not adding everything up. And the one thousand dollar shopping spree..... you say its "dollar store" items. Well A LOT of people shop at the dollar store & have no problem with purchasing stuff from there so I don't see the problem there. And you didn't say they used your card without your permission to purchase something for themselves so it sounds like you're upset with yourself for making a purchase you can't afford & trying to point fingers. In my opinion they are doing nothing wrong they are just trying to run a business & make a living like we all are!
I love them

AMERICAN PUBLISHERS IS THE BEST COMPANY I HAVE DEALT WITH!!! I receive all of my magazines and i loved the shopping spree. The company is always courteous to me when i call them with a problem and always help me out the best they can. So i don't see what all the fuss is about.

no its not a scam you get what you pay for. magazines for 5 years and a online shopping spree. i don't know what kind of stuff you can get with the shoppping spree because they only send you the info on it if you do buy the magazines. the employees don't even know the website. i quit because i felt bad about asking people to sign up for that for 5 years but you have a choice and you can say no! i wouldn't do it. Who reads 6 mags in a month? someone who don't have a life at all i guess but its not worth it to me. i just needed a job really bad and they r always hiring cause they fire you if you can't sell. they threaten to fire you everyday. they will tell you everyday that your not trying hard enough. they will tell you that if you don't need the job lots of other people do. they made me feel worse instead of better. i hate that place but it is not a scam. if you want to pay for 6 mags a month for 5 years then do it. its up to you!

I worked there before (Mountain Area Communications) I believe it is called.. well something like that anyway. I can say, I have to agree with "I worked there" on some things to. The threat of being fired is over your head daily, they have their favorites... BIGTIME. I was there bc I desperately needed a job to. They told me everyday I wasn't trying hard enough, tho I sold those magazines and made what they call "caps".(making them money). The last straw was one morning when I came in sick,(but came in) and bc I wasn't smiling while talking on the phone, they told me to go home on what they were calling a "day suspension for not smiling". I left, didn't come back. When it was time for my paycheck, i went to get it, they said they didn't have one for me. Then they walked away as if I wasnt standing there, and as if they expected me to leave. I told them they could get me a check or I would just sit and make myself at home until I got one. Needless to say within 5 minutes "Oh, here it is." Suddenly my check was "found." And the poor people who gave them their credit card info... what a rip off... poor people.. DON'T DO IT.

I set it up but until I figured outhow much they where going to take i called back to cancel but was told you need a cancel number., so I have even gave them the cancalation number and they still would not cancel within three days, so now they don't get any payment since my bank account has been closed. Now they will try everything to get money , but won't work since I have no account under my name.

I used to work there. It's not really a scam. You are told everything that you are signing up for. You do get a free one thousand dollar shopping spree, but in return you have to order 6 magazines a month at 3.95 a WEEK. which they combine it all together and it ends up being like around 16 dollars a month, but they consolidate your payments. They have you pay about 50 bucks a month, so you get it all paid in full in about a year. And when you add it all up, you're paying around 950.00 for the 5 years worth of magazines and the thousand dollar shopping spree. If you pay attention to everything that is being said, you know what's going on, and if you still don't understand, then you're completely stupid.

WHY would you give them your credit card number if they call and tell you that you had won $1000? And if you hadn't entered a contest how could you win?

I will agree this shopping spree is a scam. I have won it several times.$500 each. One of the items was an ink pen and shipping and handling was $12.95. They can't MAKE you go into a verbal contract to buy 6 years worth of magazines and there is NO way it could cost $1500.

first of all look up the definition of scam if it were a scam u wld not get any mags they wld empty your bank acct instead of deduting the pymt u agree to pay an u wldnt hear from them but if u dont pay ur bill with tht company they will call you to collect they include there number with the contract u r mailed an your bank always has it on file

furthermore you are called bc ur name was referred from a major cc company an u speak with a sales person you are never told you won a gcertifate or shopping spree you are tld u were selected to recieve mag an the gc is a promotion to go with it; it is a 1000 gc an you are told it is to one major site an tht u have to pay shipping and handling you speak with 3 different ppl and you are also put thru a tape verification system where the customer answers the questions regarding the contract so if you cannot understand something after hearing it 3 times then you have a major problem and have no bussiness answering the fone anyway

changing your debit or cc will not cancel the account the mags are prepaid in advance when you place your order therefore you cannot cancel unless you pay a ccl fee and thats y they tell you during the tape verification tht you cannot cancel you recieve the mags for 5 yrs and if you dont like the ones that are preselected you can change them and they do consilidate your payments in 20 mos but who wants to pay for sumthing for 5 yrs and its 3.95 a week that they consilidate but if you like mags it is a good deal but ppl need to listen before impulse buying and the gift certificate is a promotion for buying the magazines you are never told you won the gc you were tld u were selected to recieve it bc your cc company gave our your information

it is a scam when they don's send you the magazines or the promised voucher. It is also a scam when you try to call back and cancel your 60 month subscription and the number is no longer in service.

Amen! Yeah they suspensed me too! I didn't go back either! They told me I didn't seem happy to be there like I used to. Who could be happy when your asking people to buy something they can't even afford, we were in recession people were telling me they were layed off couldn't find a job and here I am asking them to buy something they don't even need! It was depressing to me. I felt guilty about it. If you can't afford food, gas or to pay your other bills then why in the hell would you buy mags? They said I wasn't trying hard enough so I say the hell with them! One day they will be out of business cause the only reason people do it is to get the free stuff and it's not even worth it!
