O Fallon, MO |
I grew up in Carthage and in my mind's eye I can still see the lovely homes along beautiful tree-lined Main Street. I recall many of the faces of the dear folks that made up "our town" back in the 50's and 60's. There was "Doc McNabb" who, I thought, saved my life numerous times from my many bouts with tonsillitis. Clyde Ruby and his lovely wife ran Ruby's grocery; they sold the best sirloin steak around. Hubert Hunt sold us our first Zenith TV set in the 50's. One of my most unforgetable characters was Hamil Henley. He would frequently be in the library talking to Nellie when I was there. I could name many, many more but space is short. Suffice it to say, I recall all the good times the little town afforded - the Fall Festival, etc. I also recall some of the heartbreak the townfolk shared - the deaths of some of young people who were too young to die.
Carthage will always be home to me. Remember the everflowing water fountain in the heart of town? |

Hi Bonnie, I used to live in Carthage too. I remember everyone you mentioned, and probably a few dozen more. I can remember all my grade school teachers, Mrs. Flick, Mrs. Alexander, Mrs. Skillman, Mrs. Wells, and my 5th grade teacher escapes me, but I remember her long fingernails! What street did you live on? I have a sneaky suspicion that I know you rather well. I will give you a hint, and you tell me if you remember, and if you do, then you are who I think you are...if you don't, your someone else. Can you remember the cat and dog fights we used to pretend to have walking to school early in the mornings? You lived across the street from me, I think. Let me know!!! Will be glad to hear from you. I hope you are who I think you are!
