Campaign Contributions in 2011 - City of Morganton Election
I encourage those of you interested in Morganton and its' future to take a look at campaign contributions from various people and related businesses in the Catawba Valley to the 2011 Re-Elect Mel Cohen Mayor Campaign. At some point soon, the details of these contributions will be posted here, and other locations on the internet, but in the meantime some basic information should be made available as it is "Public Information" and has to date not been published in the local newspaper or in any other mass communication operating in the Morganton area or serving Morganton in some manner.
It is very interesting that William F. Davis (Bill) as it shows on election documentation gave $ 500.00 dollars to the Re-Elect Mel Cohen Mayor of Morganton campaign as well as serving as treasurer of the campaign and serving as "Chairman" of the Morganton ABC Board since its' inception in 1963-1964.
Also, three individuals with ties to Catawba County beer distributors / wholesalers gave a total of $ 1500.00 dollars to get Mayor Mel Cohen re-elected mayor. Could it be these folks want to "BUY" the ability to SELL their products at the annual Morganton Historic Festival each September ?
Isn't it also interesting that The Morganton Historic Festival, Inc. is a "separate" entity controlled by a 5-member board featuring none other than Mayor Mel Cohen as President. I ask if the fact that Mel Cohen is mayor and also the top officer of a board established to oversee the Morganton Historic Festival using the downtown area, as well as requiring city employees to work on Friday and volunteer to work on Saturday, something that is NOT allowed by current labor laws is a proper way to express to the citizens good conduct that also violates Morganton's ethics policy from 2010.
The Morganton Historic Festival is a GREAT thing. It brings people to Morganton to showcase our beauty and what we have to offer, but this arrangement is one that appears to operate in a manner similar to that of a "DICTATOR" society and not in a manner that is "Of the people, By the people, and For the people".
For just a SMALL amount of money, one can obtain a "LARGE" volume of information on contributors who helped Mayor Mel Cohen raise
$ 11,203.87 to get re-elected after having served as Mayor of Morganton since 1985, or 26 years.
As this story is being composed, local rumor has it that the "friendship" between newly elected city council member Sidney Simmons and Mayor Mel Cohen has hit a "BUMP" in the road in that a rumor heard by many indicates councilman Simmons is planning on running against Mel Cohen next time for mayor in 2015. This will be interesting indeed if it comes to pass. A lot can change in 3 years.
More details later. Stay tuned.
