I was planning on trading my truck for something that uses less gasoline. Then I saw that the new Georgia Law hits someone who trades cars with a NEW TAX of 7% to get a new Tag. This is 1400 Dollars on a $20,000 car. Ouch! The Ad Valorum is exempt but it would take 10 or 12 years to make up for this initial TAX. This will hurt Car Dealers and Jobs since people like me will not trade but keep the old one. I won't trade again unless my truck falls apart now.

Another TAX from our State Republican Liberals Ralston, Allison and 'no real' Deal. Does anyone know if Gooch voted for this?

Actually you would probably pay less since it replaces sales tax also

This tax is the sales tax and if you trade in your car you pay tax on the difference in the price

Your legislature passed this tax this past session. When trading with an individual before this bill there was no sales tax only the so called birthday tax when you renewed your tag.

This will really hurt private sales. Picture paying $5,000 for a car then having to come up with $350 to get it registered. Definitely a bad idea.

This is a smoke and mirror trick. They will replace the Ad Valorem Tax with the Title Tax. As soon as the cost of a Tag goes down because of the removal of the Ad Valorem Tax. They will start increasing the cost of the Tags. In the end you will be paying the same or more for your Tags without the Ad Valorem Tax and You will be paying the new Title Tax also. The same old tricks.

Let's see:
1. We don't like the new tax.
2. We don't like the old tax.
3. We don't like taxes of any type
4 We do like police protection
5. We do like the fire department to be able to come to our home when and if it catches on fire
6. We do like emergency services to come to our or those we love aid when needed
7. We do like roadways that are well maintained
8. We do like for our children to receive a good education
9. We do want quick action by our local government if disaster strikes, you know things like flooding, tornados
10. We certainly DO NOT like having to think about how all these things WE LIKE get paid for......JUST DON'T TAX ME!!!!!!!!!

This is typical of Topix. This issue was debated in the Georgia Legislature last March. The time to complain to your Senator and Representative was then. Too late now but typical of the complainers on Topix. Don't come to the TEA party meetings, the Conservative Business Alliance forums, the Commissioner's meetings, the city council meetings but sit back and complain after the fact. Of course you wouldn't have much of a life if you couldn't complain on Topix.

You're doing an awful lot of complaining yourself. Weird that.

You either, you complainer!
By the way this bill was RUSHED through at the last second with no debate. No time to talk to a Representative, no floor debate. Lamar even said he did not even know much about the effects of it. We are just learning the full law.

From what I hear you won't be "taxed" on what you actually pay for a car, you pay tax on the book value as defined by the state instead. So if you buy a car with mechanical issues for say $2000 but the state book value is $8000 you will pay tax on $8000. Like most this tax will mostly cost the poor and middle class since they don't pay bribes, uh, I mean "campaign contributions" very often.

I agree basic Services need to be supported, the key is the word BASIC. Socialism does not work, ask Europe.
