Is being in a sorority really worth the ridiculous amount of money you have to pay? I don't think so. What do they do anyway? Fundraisers? It seems like all sororities are concerned about is recruiting new members and buying clothes with their symbols. Some of the things I've heard about a sorority at MSU are not only ridiculous but plain creepy. Making up silly and awkward songs with weird moves to perform at every meeting, recruitment activities and meetings that make you feel like you're joining a cult, secretly looking over all of your information and finding out where you live to randomly show up and act like you haven't one clue about them? Are all the other sororities like this? I couldn't believe how weird this one was.

I remember when I was a part of Morehead State University's drumline in 2001 and 2002 , I heard heard word around Alumni that some sororities would charge their members a fine if they sat down to eat with non-greeks. Somehow, I believed it, too.

That was probably true, there are all kinds of crazy and silly things that sororities do. I don't see how someone would want to be a part of a group that does things like that, I would be ashamed.

Just like everything else, it will have its good moments and its bad moments- you will develop some good friends and also some women aren't worth dealing with...but you will learn some valuable lessons, and even if it is fund raising for a charity-what a noble gesture on your part to donate time and effort to raise money for a cause.
Otherwise, you may find campus a little bit more lonely and more so on the weekends. You can always become inactive, but you may not always be pledge material...normally it is rare for an upper class man/women to join a sorority. Beside you may find a network of individuals with the same major and assist you in studying.
Times have changed since I had attended, but I think it may still be worth investigating, unless you aren't a group kind of individual. It always pays to network, now and throughout life and you may build some bridges that may benefit you later on.

If you feel like you need to pay for your friends, go ahead. See how many of them will associate with you without being a member of their cult though. That should be interesting.

Look at the different posts and see who you are more like, one that was fully participatory in multiple organizations in college. Who posted an honest response, or those of the loners, who may or may not have attend schooling beyond high school. You are your own person, and as I said, it can be a rewarding experience. Plus it never hurts to have a wide array of friends and not a narrow band of associates who see the world as you do- because that is not reflective of society at large. It will make you a better person, not a bitter hater.

Those who did not attend college have no idea what fraternities or sororities are like.
Repno- did you attend college?- yes or no.
Were you ever a member of a collegiate fraternity?- yes or no.
I await your common sense answer.

I attend college and have been around sororities more than I can handle. The starter if this thread is right, they do some weird and ridiculous things. I mean, you can build friendships if you're lucky and maybe a little leadership... but one has told me that their main purpose is fundraising. Mostly for children groups. Wouldn't it help more to just send those hundreds of dollars they spend on admission, clothes and pins right to the charities? Maybe some does? I don't know but I would definitely never join a sorority. Everyone's different though

I know that their are sororities at MSU that are not composed of your stereotypical sorority girls. There is one that tends to draw "bigger girls" (not a bad thing), one that is actually very inexpensive, I think maybe $60 a semester. Same with Fraternities. There's your typical party frat, the jock fraternity, the townie fraternity, then you have the "geek fraternity", honors fraternity, history fraternity, math fraternity, band fraternity.... and it goes on. When you get into college you see that Greek life isn't like what's portrayed in the movies at all. Animal House was a funny movie but its just not true to life.

Given some of your spelling and the fact you claim your education was common sense, I had assume it was high school graduate...at best. Sorry for the loss of your money.

It sounded like to me OHfifteengirl was just talking about one particular sorority. I go to morehead state and after being a part of a sorority myself ohfifteengirl is right about a lot of things. Of course every sorority is different but this bad apple pretty much ruined them all for me. Luck for them, I am nice and understanding.
