Why don't this lift all laws, rules and regulations on children so the brats can have their way with us! Giving children a free ride doesn't do much help guide them and creates the monsters they will be as adults!

Why not send a message to all pedophiles and child molesters... Vermont Wants You.

"Oh that's OK little Cindy Lou, you sent your boyfriend a picture of your 12-year old hootchie but we know he would never share it or publish it on the internet".

Totally sending the wrong message to our kids. We should be preaching responsibility for your own actions not "damn the consequences, I just want to fit in".

Vermont lawmakers want to sell the state as being a mini-California but they are only setting themselves up for much more trouble down the line. Where will the line eventually be drwan? Once this law passes, they'll lower the age of consent to 9 and we'll see Chris Hanson in town once a week for his TV show.

Can you imagine the 18yr Old "Boy" sending a pick of his dingy to a 13yr Old Girl?

Now the Double standard:

Can you imagine the 18yr old "Girl" sending a Nude pic to a 13yr Old Boy?

Or now it could be Boy Boy or Girl Girl....

I could go on and on......

My Child has no Pic taking capabilities on her cell.

Education as to what happens to those pics
is key.

My child thinks sexting is disgusting.

I was appauled when I heard on National news that teenagers could be charged with a crime for sexually explicity photos. I think Vermont and all other states don't need more laws to charge people with such crimes. What happened to people's first ammendment rights? It is reprehensible that our lawmakers would actually charge underage kids with a sexual photos as a crime, let alone something that could be carried on their record for life.

More and more it seems like Americans are being stripped of their free speech rights and possession of these images may be grounds for counseling and parents should be the ones to punish their kids, not the state. I am glad Vermont at least isn't going to buy into this nonsense and not make things even harder for young people today than they already are. I think as a society we should be ashamed of ourselves that this is actually a crime.

Good Point. The more bulshit laws we have against kids going on their permanent records and depriving them of a future, I don't want to hear people complain when their crimes escalate to something worse.

The solution is not to make sexting OK, the solution is too make it sending or receiving a sext message a crime, such as a misdemeanor with a 3-strikes rule before lifting the charges to sexual offender status.

Many of the kids sexting now will quit after the first charge and have to appear before a judge with their parents or they will do it anyway and hit the sex offenders list, there will be no in between.

I believe parents have absolutely no idea how many of their kids are already sexting or how young they began doing it. We all know what peer pressure was like in school and education from parents and teachers about self-esteem and self-respect falls on deaf ears when you are the only kid who isn't doing it. Parents, check your kids phones on a regular basis or do not get them camera phones or web cams.

Lets face it though, why should it be a crime for a 17 year old girl to send a nude photo of herself to a 17 year old boy on a camera? Why should authorities get involved with that crap?

It is kind of scary that there are people out here who disrespect our constitutional right to privacy, and to free speech. These kids aren't even terror suspects. What goes on in their private lives should remain private. Let the school principal or their parents deal with it not the authorities.

The debate was over whether teenages should be charged with a crime for texting nude images of themselves. Well if I were a parent I would be angry if a teacher called me and made such a discovery, but what goes on in people's private lives are not worthy of more red tape, courts and attorneys. Already the US has 25 percent of the world's incarcerated people, and unfortunately many of these people are not killers, rapists or phedophiles, they are in prison for these stupid mandatory sentences for non violent drug offenses, many of them. It is totally ludicrous that it would come to this. Each year our democracy seems to dwindle away and as a result the focus on our most dangerous criminials is decreased.

Obviously when you see people who are this accusatory and attack someone else because they don't agree with them, they need serious help. Of course some people would like to put everyone who does something that isn't acceptable by community standards in prison. I resent being called names just because I happen to believe in free speech and that high school kids sending naughty photos of themselves to other high school students should not be a crime. This state has so many people in our prisons already we have to send them to other states. For those who think the solution is to lock everyone up for every crime that comes to mind, that is insane. That is why our country is as messed up as it is.

This story along with this thread, is a total absolute joke... I find it amusing the idea of issuing fines and later if they are caught again registered as sex offenders. GTFOH... Makes about as much sense as listing a drunk for peezing on a tree a sex offender. Guess you old farts forgot about your own teen years or that is what scares you. They are doing the same damn things we did but HIGH TECH so to speak... How many Polaroid pics do you think were floating around in our day or did we forget that little invention of the 60's????

Just leave it alone and see what happens! A year or two from now we can all read the stats and draw our own conclusions! Maybe a few more injuries or deaths would help you all out! How many jokes have killed so far? Whats a few more going to hurt! Maybe your kids will make the news in the worst way there is DEAD!

What the hell are you talking about??? Never mind I guess its an RV off topic comment concerning texting while driving.... That's a whole new ball of wax, which I do agree with you on, but not here... We'll wait for that accident and lawsuit to happen in the near future....
I won't even answer my cell phone while driving and my recorded message to callers even states that... Peezes alot of people off and even gave away a blue tooth because I refuse to use it...
