1 Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Common House Fly, but people just call me "Fly". You may recognize me from the roles in "If that Fly on the Wall Could Talk" and "Waiter there's a Fly in my Soup." Yes, I have accomplished alot. But enough about me. I would like to share with you the story about the aforementioned Worm, or as I knew him, Willy Worm. You see, like myself, Willy was no ordinary Worm, spending their lives in the dirt in an anonomous existence, never being recognized. No - not Willy. Willy WORM aspired to more than this. He had a bright future. He had to start from the ground up to distinguish himself from other creepy-crawlies, insects, spiders, etc.- you know, the little gross things that you don't see until it's too late. Willy WORM believed that he was destined to be famous. He wanted to someday be the topic of heated conversation, exagerations, speculation, slander, and even internet restaurant reviews. He needed someone to just give him a chance. Last Wednesday, Willy WORM got that chance. While other restaurants had refused to see his potential, the owners of Barrett's Brick Cafe in Monroe welcomed his arrival in a 50 pound box of romaine lettuce. Now typically, famous worms are not given their first big break in a 50 pound box of romaine lettuce, in fact, very rarely or never does this occur. But Willy WORM wanted to be different - he had a Dream. Now the owners of Barrett's Brick Cafe, Barrett and Lisa Allman, had owned restaurants for years, and decided to relocate to Monroe, Wisconsin about a year and a half ago. They wanted to be part of the community, buy a house, put their children in school, and see if there was some way that they could contribute - make Monroe a better place to live. So they asked alot of questions, like "What does Monroe want or need? What's missing here?" They listened and decided to offer Southern Wisconsin something different: a new restaurant, built by local contractors, such as Erickson Plumbing, Monroe Heating and Sheet Metal, Double G Concrete, Clark Electric, and Witt Construction, as well as many others who contributed. The owners used every bit of their financial resources, as well as borrowing money from a local bank, so the money would stay in Monroe. Barrett and Lisa spend ALOT of money, employed people in the community to help them, and built Barrett's Brick Cafe in a space that had been unoccupied for years in the Main Street District. The restaurant opened in November of 2008, just a few short months ago, in spite of the ominous state of the local, national, and global economy. As with every start-up business, Barrett and Lisa are learning, listening, and trying to work out all of the kinks. It's not perfect yet. The people of area have been wonderfully supportive and Barrett's Brick Cafe has been nominated for the Wisconsin Mainstreet Business of the Year. Many have already come and tried out the restaurant - but most have not yet. When you do come, you will find Barrett in the kitchen making each and every meal served, and Lisa there doing everything else, with smiles on their faces, grateful for each person who comes in the door, grateful to be part of this community, just wanting to make good food and maybe make Monroe a little better place to live. So if you were the lady who met Willy WORM that afternoon in your salad, consider yourself lucky. You gave Willy the fame he deserved, and the owners assure me that it won't ever happen again! |
