Mon City Cemetery Care

I have always believed that The Monongahela Cemetery is not only one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the valley but one of the nicest in the United States.

I have always taken care of the graves of my parents and grandparents and actually use the cemetery to walk and run in for exercise thus I am there quite often. In the last six months the care of the cemetery has gone down hill.

The workers do a terrible job or trimming around the head stones. They cut down flowers while weed whacking, flowers that people paid good money for. ect, ect, ect..........

Yesterday I went to water flowers and in the old St Marys part of the cemetery four of the water spouts were broken. Being in good shape me walking 100 yards to get water was not a big deal however for our elderly residents who still manage to take care of the graves of friends and family this is a huge challenge.

Also in this section of the cemetery I counted no less than a dozen tombstones which had fallen over or were sinking into the ground. Most of these according to the dates were not excessively old.

The head of the cemetery Mark Affinito and it's board of directors need to get their act together.

We have a beautiful thing with the Mon City Cemetery. Please don't allow it to become yet another thing in Mon City that was once a place to be proud of but do to neglect or poor attitudes no longer is.

I recently visited the Monongahela cemetery. My last visit was quite sometime ago. I was suprised at how unkept it looked compared to what I remembered. As a young adult I used to help my parents tend to the graves of my grandparents. I remember it being so crisp looking. Although still one of the nicest cemeteries anywhere, it has clearly declined in it's appearance. Why?

I recently purchased a plot there and after reading your post I visited the cemetery. I was suprised that it did in fact not look like it did back in the day. What is really concerning is that I am a member of Transfiguration Parish. I know that the Parish contributes money to the cemetery for the up keep if the St. Mary's Section where my parents are buried. You were correct, four water spouts that I found were not working and there are numerous head stones which had fallen over or are ready to fall over. Transfiguration needs to complain of stop funding the supposed up keep.

This is not right. The cemetery board of directors should make sure that proper maintenance is taking place.

maybe the stones are falling over because they are 100 years old ever think of that durrr

you try taking care of the whole cemetary with 5 people lets see what you can do

Asdasdasdad, these 5 people get paid better then you think , and when you go up there and see them sitting around complaining about how much they have to do and if they want more help they say NO!. Because it would cost them their overtime every summer. As for the headstones falling over being old , maybe on a few but not all of them.
