In June 2006, Aiken was stunned by the discovery of a decomposed body outside of a home in the heart of the horse district. The body was identified several days later as that of the house's owner, 83-year-old Dale Baldwin. The story began to twist more when authorities announced her son, 57-year-old Craig Baldwin was a suspect in her murder. It was further revealed that, the day after his mother's death, Baldwin had attended his daughter's wedding in Kentucky. There, he was interviewed by Aiken Public Safety officers, but was not taken into custody. When warrants were issued, a multistate manhunt ended peacefully in North Carolina. Although Baldwin fought extradition, he was returned to Aiken in July and was scheduled for trial in November 2007. To date, his case has still not been taken to trial in Aiken and he remains jailed in the Aiken County Detention Center costing local taxpayers more than $25,000.
