How can Monahans get a wal-mart? I mean everyone always says..."shop Monahans". Why would we want to.Lowe's is priced about 3 times to high and most of there product is sitting on a shelve with dust on it and old. Alco....is just Alco, also over priced. You can knock them out of the picture and build a Super walmart. It would bring in more people to "shop Monahans" you would have everyone from grandfall,Wickett,Pyote, wink,k ermit, mintone and even Pecos( they only have walmart, not a super wal-mart.) This would bring people here and not to Odessa, and hey while they are here in town , they might just need a bite to eat or auto parts....ect. I wish I knew why we still do not have a wal-mart....we do not need big fancy one with all the other little stores in it...just one with store product and grocery's.any idea's???

According to Walmarts 2009 growth plans they will add 240 to 250 supercenters in the United States. They will add 40 to 45 discount stores. Sams Club will add 35 to 40 stores. (Quotes are from CCBN StreetEvents transcript). I would think a concentrated effort by the Chamber, City, County and Economic Board with incentives would be the best approach. As many will tell you Walmart offers as many nightmares as dreams for a community such as ours.

Despite what many people think a super Wal-Mart would end quite a few business in town. You think that only Lowes and Alco will be effected but other stores in town will also feel the effect and slowly go under as well.

Some people will argue that it won't effect other businesses. However if you have a place where you can get all your shopping done at once you will not need to visit other locations.

I encourage everyone to check out this movie:
http://www.walmartmovie.com/

I think what Monahans really needs is another grocery store to compete with Lowes. An HEB would be nice.

Otherwise, it's not THAT bad of a drive to Odessa or Midland for other types of shopping. It makes a nice day for the family to go out of town for a bit. ;)

The walmart is a smart choice.... That way there is competition in the stores like Alco,Lowe's and the highest of all Ace. We need something like walmart to bring everyone back down to earth.

They will never put a Walmart here. There are 3 cities surrounding us that have them, Odessa, Pecos and Ft. Stockton. They say just go the short drive there for the things you need. And I also agree, it will definitely put a bunch of businesses out if they were to build one here.

a bunch of businesses go under fast, or will go under because we do go to Odessa,Pecos,or fort stockton....when we make the "short" drive, we will go to walmart and other stores to get what we need, then we eat there and gas up there to get back home, so why keep helping other towns businesses???? even if it is not a super store, just a regular wal-mart. That will not solve the Lowes issue, but would solve the alco issue,i mean you can never find what you need there and then somethimes you have to go to OD for 1 item that you need that you would think alco would have and they do not. I mean have the time I have to go to Kermit alco(cleaner store and has a LOT more) to get what i want...and there you go again supporting another town....???? I guess i will never understand this issue.

Monahans cant get a walmart because some certain politician in monahans signed an agreement that monahans would stay true to its small town businesses and they fear that a walmart would put the smaller business like alco and dollar stores and clothing stores out of business.

I think part of the issue some of you have is that you want Monahans to have the same amenities of a larger city. If you want the pleasure of small town living, you will just have to travel for certain things. It's not that bad of a trade off imho.

I still stand by my earlier statement that what is really needed is another grocery store to compete with Lowes.

I would love it if we had even Walgreens and Albertsons. Lowe's marketplace in Odessa has lower prices than the one here and half the time the kids don't even want to carry out your groceries, they're more worried about how many hours it is until they get off. Don't get me wrong, I like the small town feel of the place having lived here all my life, but these business owners have it made as far as being able to charge higher prices with no one else competing for it..

it was so nice to get a parts store here that stays open after 530 and is open 7 days a week. i agree if not a walmart at least an heb to compete with lowes. go in there and spend 100 bucks walk out with 2 bags. i have drove 2 odessa for groceries in the past but you have to make it your last stop and rush home to unload groceries. kinda irritating but oh well just have to pay high prices till a certain politician in monahans either gets his head out of his own business profits or we get a new one in office! his name rhymes with cutthroat well actually thatd be a good name for him!!!

I agree "cowgirl grandma" those kids that so call it "work" there just stand around, looking at their watches waiting for the next break and God forbid if they carry out your groceries for you, I mean isn't that what they are there for? After a long hectic day at work I would like for someone to cater to me for a change even if it is something as menial as that.

Unless it is going to financially benefit our esteemed Mayor, then you can forget Walmart or any other business making it into Monahans.

a walmart would also bring better paying jobs and incentives.im new to monahans and am finding it a little difficult to find a job here.small buisnesses arent really intrested in hiring people and the oilfield is currently going down.

Three or four stores and a few folks keep Wal Mart out. They are afraid of competition and like to rip off Monahans people who can't travel to Odessa.

Walmart does have a smaller chain of stores called "Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets". It is like the supercenter, but smaller and minus the clothing. It is same size as Lowes and has just the popular items for: grocery dept., beauty dept., pharmacy, & household supplies. I think it's perfect for Monahans.

Pecos has a regular walmart. I think monahans needs a regular one too. I also think they need to stock 30kW DPSS Nd:Yag lasers and sonic screwdrivers. They would get my money.

The owners of Alco, ACE and Lowes would burn Monahans to the ground before they allowed any Wal-Mart facilities here. They have the people at their disposal and are rich for it. Keep pushing for Wal Mart....hope the city leaders get out of the way; they want status quo - no change .

Very interesting topic. And to me it's one of those things where everyone is right. You just don't know what having larger stores would actually bring until they're here, BUT I'll tell you what, there's no need to wait. Has anyone heard of AISLE19? Please watch this video:
