WINTER BREAK GIVES SENIORS THEIR MOMENTS IN THE SUN
Wednesday, January 7, 2009 8:07 AM PST The term,“Spring Break”, is associated with young people doing all manner of silly things that generally involves mixing alcohol with water, beaches and hormones gone wild-ie., a splash of the uninhibited side of life. And, in many instances, not a good thing to watch.
The term “Winter Break”, when linked to Laughlin, goes after the “live-life-to-the-fullest” attitude of its spring counterpart, but without the scarier edges. This more mature (and beer-bongless) way of looking at things is because “Winter Break” is geared for the 50-plus crowd who are encouraged to act their age, give or take 30 years. Forget about the hormones and turn up the smiles.
This year's “Laughlin Winter Break”-the fifth in a row-takes place from January 9-15 and serves to officially kick off the national “HOPE 2009” project dedicated to the promotion of “Health, Optimism, Preservation and Enrichment” of everyday life.“HOPE 2009” concentrates on the “silver lining beneath every cloud” theory, which will be revealed by educating, motivating and inspiring others to take responsibility and make a difference in this world-one person and one small action at a time.
“Many people don't appreciate the connection between their attitude or outlook on life with their physical, mental and emotional health,” states Sue Arko,“Laughlin Winter Break” promoter.“Our Laughlin event aims to change people's outlook for the better, one person at a time, and thereby have a profound effect on entire communities.” Among the events planned for this year's “Break” that tie into the “HOPE” acronym are:
* Health-activities will include a fun and fitness class, yoga class and fun and fitness walk.
* Optimism-promoted through laughter, touted as the best medicine, with the return of Mr. E.
* Preservation-presentations will demonstrate how the smallest actions with earth-friendly living can make the biggest difference to the environment.
* Enrichment-illustrated through live shows featuring inspirational and talented entertainers, all over the age of 60, live Broadway Theatre workshops and volunteer opportunities.
Also included are what have become popular “Laughlin Winter Break” events including:
*“The Polar Bear Plunge”-an invigorating dip in the Colorado River;
* Chili cook-offs-two chances to taste and two chances to qualify for the world championship (see page 17).
* a classic car rally;
* and many other activities such as a sock hop; senior prom; talent shows, variety shows; educational seminars; fitness activities; wine tasting; dance contests; slot and gaming tournaments-and much more.
“Laughlin Winter Break” is sponsored by the Laughlin Tourism Committee (LTC).

According to Jena Morga, LTC executive director, among the highlights of “Laughlin Winter Break” are the many educational seminars and classes offered with seniors in mind-another contrast to Spring Break which is all about “anti-classes”. Is there a price tag? Yes and no. Admission to most events is via a pass while some of the events are free and open to all comers. The schedule of events, as best we have been informed, are contained on the following pages. The pass An all-events pass is $49 per person and gains entry into the full week of official “Laughlin Winter Break” activities. A special rate for locals (residents of Laughlin or Mohave County Arizona) is available for $25 (must show driver's license to obtain this pass). There are also one-day passes available for $25 per day. Passes may be purchased at any “Laughlin Winter Break” information desk to be set up in the following participating Laughlin casino/resorts: * Riverside Resort; * Aquarius; * Edgewater; * Colorado Belle; * Tropicana Express; * Golden Nugget Laughlin; * River Palms; and * Harrah's Laughlin. The idea behind the passes is for participants to take them to each event and have them stamped. When you complete your “passport” by attending the activities on the card you will be eligible for a variety of prizes. A get-away package will go to the Grand Prize Winner in drawings to be held at the end of the event (winners will be notified). In addition to entry to all events, pass holders receive a coupon for one free bingo card for one game to be used at the Paradise Bingo room within the Riverside Resort. For complete details on what you get with the passes and any other particulars of “Laughlin Winter Break 2009, see the information desks which will be open each day at the casinos listed above during the following hours: Friday, January 9 (1 p.m.-7 p.m.); and from Saturday, January 10-through Wednesday, January 14 (9 a.m. to 6 p.m.); and Thursday, January 15 (9 a.m.-11 a.m.). There are also “Winter Break” packages linked to hotel accommodations for a variety of prices. For information on what is available, see the participating casinos listed above or visit www.winterbreak.us .
