Do they really know what there "job" is? When they are on the hunt for a suspect on the run do they do all that is possible to find him? When they pull over a car for a violation do they sometimes let the bad ones go?

Where is this coming from? Do you have reason to believe they are not? Do you think it is easy to be a cop and that if they make a mistake or one slips through the cracks that they are not doing their job?

I don't know what the police in Modesto are doing, but they aren't serving the community. At least the ones who work and pay taxes.

They spend their time giving out bullsh*t money making traffic tickets. Like the numerous seatbelt "violation" citations they hand out in front of schools, where the 200 lb. 15 year old "victim" isn't actually in any danger. If they wanted to do some real good, they'd be out on Briggsmore or Coffee stopping people going 50 mph. with their toddler not in a carseat. But that would be, you know, WORK.

Ever have a problem and need the police? Try calling them. The rude cow who answers the phone acts like you've called her at home and you're bothering her. The cops themselves cannot be counted on to even show up, at least until AFTER the fact. That way, no chance of running into any of those mean, mean, criminals. So much easier to hassle and intimidate the law abiding and financially solvent.

Mail theft, car break ins and burglaries are rampant. Call the cops. Meh. They'll take a report over the phone. Maybe. But whatever they do, they'll be sure to make you feel like you are really inconveniencing them.

Illegal? Got no license? No problem! Even if the Keystone Cops manage to give you a ticket, the moron traffic commmissioner will make sure it's dismissed. No worries here, amigo.

And if I see one more canine officer letting his dog crap in the park near my house and NOT CLEANING UP AFTER THEIR DOG, I will scream. You can get a ticket for that, officer. Shall I make a citizens arrest?

I noticed the rot really set in after they hired that lazy a55 police chief from L. A. The one who worked for a brief time, then retired on some obscene amount of disability money for a bad knee he suffered way before he got to Modesto? Loads of integrity there.

Yup. The police in Modesto do us proud. Lazy, rude, condescending, cowardly. And they can't remember who they hell they work for.

Chief Ray Wasden is a good man, and he's trying, but he can't do it alone. The MPD needs a thorough housecleaning. Some cops don't deserve to be cops, but they aren't allowed to fire someone just because they have a lousy attitude, so the community is stuck with them.

Slow down a minute.I am not saying that they aren't doing there job.I could only imagine how difficult there job is.I am sure there like with any job there are good ones and bad ones. There have been a couple of times when I think they could have done a bit more than what they did.I am not meaning to push any buttons.I was just asking a question that I thought would start a good discussion.Sorry to affend(?) you.

I have to say I agree. We have called the police numerous times because the neighbors were beating the shi* out of each other. It took them at least an hour to come out and sometimes they never did come out. We ended up calling an ambulance and cancelling the police coming out. They don't hesitate when they get a call from some uppity person complaining that a car has expired tags though!

The other day, I saw a cop giving a ticket to a woman after she made a left turn from the wrong lane off Rumble Rd. And she looked like she could ill afford whatever the city is going to extort from her for this earthshaking offense.

MPD, you are little more than thieves with badges. In fact, you are WORSE than the people you are supposed to be protecting us from. At least they don't pretend to be something they're not.

I saw another person get hit because someone did this exact thing, left turn from wrong lane is a BIG issue if you are the poor person who gets hit because of the other drivers rude, careless behavior. And how do you know that she did not make this turn illegally because she was impaired by drugs or alchohol or just her own selfish "I don't give a damn about anyone but me" attitude? This officer WAS doing his job and keeping other drivers "safe" from careless selfish people like her. Everyone wants the police in their business when they want something from the police, but those same people scream "I don't want to live in a police state, I don't want my civil liberties affected, I don't want someone telling me how to live, blah, blah, blah" People have made it impossible for the law and now they want it fixed. Police yourselves once in a while.

Blame the parents of these kids for not teaching them better, they are raising spoiled selfish little brats and it is not the Police Departments job to teach kids respect or COMMON SENSE.

The Modesto police are doing there job, just ask other agencys, who hire them away from Modesto. Why do the qualified officers leave, beacuse Modesto P.D. does not pay what Manteca does..If the public would not clog up the system wirh the nonsense calls, the officers could handle there calls in a timely manner. If there are no cops in service, then what..The police department enforces the California vehicle code they dont write it. The city of Modesto can be proud of there officers, ther doing a great job, for being understaffed and in a hiring freeze..

Kathleen, maybe I should have been a bit clearer. This woman (a grandmotherly type with a minivan full of kids) turned left before the left turn lane started. There was no one coming the other way, and I'd bet this was something we've all done while driving, even the cops. I know I have. Was she drunk or high? Maybe. But I kinda doubt it.
The issue I have with the MPD is that they used this flimsy excuse to stop this woman, then they will proceed to go over everything they can find with a fine tooth comb looking for violations they can squeeze money from. Time was when the police in Modesto actually CARED that people knew the rules of the road and drove safely.
Not only do they NOT care anymore, from my recent experience with a Modesto officer, they prefer the public to be in the dark. All the better to threaten and attempt to bamboozle. The officer who stopped me was rude and extremely unhelpful. And I'm being generous. I had a few questions about the ticket I got, and he refused to answer even one of them. These weren't hard questions, either. Is this a moving violation? etc. Don't tell me he didn't know! He also didn't sign his name on the ticket. True, I haven't had a traffic ticket in more than twenty years, but when did cops stop doing this? I got more help and info from the girl who answers the phone at my freakin' insurance company!!
The subsequent trip to traffic court was a real eye opener. Know how many illegals drive on our streets with NO license, NO insurance, NO registration? A LOT. This is what I saw happening. They get an interpreter, because you know, no speaka de english. They tell the judge, "ees not my car", so there go the violations for no registration or insurance. That leaves only the driver's license. Judge reduces the fine down to $250, make payments. They leave court relaxed and smiling, with their burro-like wives and a passel of anchor babies trotting behind. Some even drove away! UNBELIEVEABLE.
Know how much I paid for MY ticket?$400. For an illegal U-turn. Think that's fair? I've lived in Modesto for thirty years. I raised my family here. I work and pay taxes. I don't make nuisance calls. The police are supposed to protect and serve. They do neither. The next time I need help or see a crime in progress, I will think twice before calling the police. MPD sucks.

You made an illegal U-turn, you pay the price, you can grandma this woman up all you want, she still violated the traffic law and that can be dangerous, especially since you say she had a van full of children. I think your issue here, judging by your remarks, is with the Hispanic influx, and that is for a completely different post, if that is what you are upset about. And before you bash me, no I am not Hispanic, but this idea that EVERY hispanic in this country is illegal and criminal, is just getting old. How do you know that "grandma" as you put it had insurance or even a valid license, for all you know she had it revoked for medical reasons. And you certainly sound old enough to know that just because someone is up in years and has children in the car, does not mean they are definately not under the influence. I am thinking that had she or someone like her, caused an acccident that involved you, you would be on some other post screaming for the police to do something about careless drivers.

Crimony! You still don't get it, do you?
People like me are sick and tired of seeing the police with their priorities mixed up. We are tired of having our houses, cars and businesses broken into and our mail stolen, while the police in this town waste time, energy and resources bending and twisting the law giving out traffic violations that will generate money for the city.

We are disgusted that when we DO have contact with Modesto's finest, we are treated rudely and purposely given inaccurate information and had information witheld from us because they can't be bothered, or it makes their job easier to just lie like a rug and they figure we don't know the difference.

And why bring race into this? I said NOTHING about race. I said Illegal! YOU made the gigantic leap from Illegal, to Mexican (which I happen to be half Mexican, so in your face!) to ALL Hispanics!

Illegal means in the country illegally! Comprende? As in not supposed to be here? I have a problem with someone who doesn't have a driver's license, insurance or registration sharing the road with me. And if you had half a brain, you would TOO. I have an even bigger problem when that person gets to court, and they have two violations dismissed and the fine reduced as low as it will go on the third. While I and others don't get the same consideration!

And yeah, yeah, yeah. Grandma picking up her grandkids after school should get the DEATH PENALTY for not staying exactly inside the painted lines on the road. Maybe you think the police should start having roadside executions for such heinous crimes?

The MPD need an enormous attitude adjustment. They need to crack down on the real criminals and do something about the rampant disregard for the law in this town, instead of hassling the law abiding and financially solvent. They need to start treating the public with decency and a little respect, instead of using their badges to intimidate and extort money from them.

My sister, who is an attorney, has been saying for some time now that there is a real problem with law enforcement in Stanislaus County. The corruption has become really, really, bad and the number of complaints against them have soared, which I find troubling. She also said that a big proportion of our serious crime is commited by people who travel here from LA or from the Bay Area? Know why? Because the cops in Modesto have the reputation for being lazy and soft on real crime and criminals.

But hey. As long as they're out there making sure gray haired old ladies stay inside the lines when they drive, we can all relax. Forget the methheads and thieves. Forget the assaults, the burglaries, the mail and identity theft, the bank and convenience store robberies, the gangbangers shooting up the mall, forget all that. It's more important for the MPD to stop people making illegal U-turns. Cause you know, that could be D-A-N-G-E-R-O-U-S!

But damn. It's sure profitable.

Hey, you made it mexican with the word "comprende" don't be mad at me because you are racist. As for your Bay Area remark, I never saw half the racist, selfish, inconsiderate people in the Bay Area, which by the way is where I am from ("in your face" as you so maturely put it) as I have in Modesto. Get over yourself here in the Valley.
