I have been struck during the past 30 years of life in Santa Barbara at what survived fires: rock and brick walls surrounding charred remains of wood-frame houses that were and are MANDATED in "earth-quake country" by ill-informed but well-intentioned governments and bureaucrats. Even the 200 foot setbacks in some locations have not helped, since no one seems to be responsible for maintaining them beyond a smaller perimeter - WHEN there is even that much room to "donate" to that corridor - and, sometimes the setback areas are endangered bird habitats (Southern coastal California) and conflicts over developing within the area prevent either so-called "profitable" building or preservation. And when a fire comes, it's lose-lose. Of what are the old missions constructed? Clay and rock and tile roofs. NOT stucco covered wood! And most of them have survived hundreds of years, some through earthquakes AND fires. Perhaps it's time to reconsider building codes that mandate tile roofs and wood frames. All those tile roofs did not save the hundreds of wooden houses beneath them.

YOU have got to be kidding! Don't even bring God into your gay marriage wannabe rights. I would have voted yes for it if it specified civil marriage and not crossing over to the bible's stand point (Marriage in the eyes of god is between a man and a woman). You're not changing HIS mind. Now can we focus on the needed prayers for the fire victims? |

Thankyou Mario. All people are equal. |

Sure, and while I'm praying 'll say a few for you . Maybe GOD will forgive your ignorance. |

My father built the house on the corner of Dyer St and Aults. Does anyone know if it survived?
Thanks |

The coroner's office announced that there is a "safe and well" phone number to contact regarding displaced friends/relatives. Please post it ASAP

Because WILDFIRE(!) is one of those made up, flashy TV News terms.(Now I also hear FIRESTORM on occasion.) Not all that many years ago, there were "brush fires" and "forest fires." Now, anything over an acre is called a WILDFIRE(!) by the dopey news anchors. |

One thing that people seem to forget. When the firefighters and police tell you to leave, you need to comply. While your own home may not be in eminent danger, the fire fighters need the roads to be kept clear so that they can easily get their trucks and equipment in and out of the areas as necessary to combat some of the smaller blazes. If we are on the road, we are in their way. Add to that the fact that if you stay too long, you could get trapped yourself. If you become a potential victim through your own actions, you could tie up valuable resources that could be better utilized elsewhere in that they now are forced to put other considerations on hold and come to your rescue.

i was a witness to the fire when the the first fire truck arived at veterans park, they spent several minutes cutting the lock on the gate to enter the park grounds ,, i don't know why it took nearly ten minutes to enter the park area, by the time they did enter , more engines had arrived and the wind ad whipped a small fire into a conflagration which had spread to nearly every tree and it looked rather futile then. i mean i drove around the block shablow to hubbard st to simshaw and sayre st and the very first firefighter was still moving like a slow fart to get the
saw and cut the lock,,,now i dare say if the first engine hadn't wasted those first precious minutes, the blaze may have been contained in the park. |

it's still standing |

Thank you for letting me know!! I was born and raised in Sylmar and lived in that house as a child. I loved the area and went to Hubbard St. School. I am so saddened to hear about the fires and the people that lost their homes. |
