Did you know it costs $9,000 more to operate a Prius for 200,000 miles?

I have a friend who has had one for 150,000 miles. On a road trip, we talked about the costs. Besides the standard costs of fuel, oil changes and very small repairs (which we all pay if we own cars), it costed far less than my car (we both bought cars about the same time). So maybe all of those costs add up in the last 20,000-50,000 miles???

If you compare the cost of operatiog a Corrola and a Prius for 200,000 miles.

Initial cost of a Prius is $15,000 more than a Corrola, just borrowing the extra money will cost.

You need new $5,000 batteries at 100,000 miles on a Prius.

The Prius has a gas motor and electric, very complex/costly to maintain. In fact if you operate a Prius in the wrong mode it burns out the batteries, you cannot drive it with low batteries.

At 200,000 miles the Prius will be ready for new batteries and the Corolla will still be drivable with no maintenance needed to sell it.

Prius resale with high miles is low, take a look at craigslist.

Yes, I'm sure you believe all that.

So how much more does a Mercedes E350 cost over 200,000 miles compared to a Hyundai Sonata? How much more does a V8 Mustang cost over 200,000 miles compared to a V6?

How much more does a Hummer H2 cost compared to a used bicycle over 200,00 miles?

Bob, bob, bob. I have NEVER seen any website that shows a battery has to be replaced every 100,000 miles (150,000). And I have absolutely NEVER seen the cost to be $5K.$3,000 in every single google search I've done.
Sometimes the battery doesn't have to be replaced for 180,000 miles or longer.
The batteries are warrantied for 8 years.
http://www.roadandtrack.com/article.asp...
http://nz.answers.yahoo.com/question/index...
In the people posting on yahoo answers, the newer ones are costing FAR cheaper.
Even Toyota's own website the battery is covered for 8 years:
http://www.toyota.com/prius-hybrid/warranty.h...
Hybrid-Related Component Coverage: Hybrid-related components for hybrid vehicles are covered for 8 years/100,000 miles. The HV battery may have longer coverage under emissions warranty. Refer to applicable Owner’s Warranty Information booklet for details.

I'm waiting for the canned line about hybrids being "feel good" machines for liberals/treehuggers and that they're not rational.

People believe what they want to believe...even when the facts are apparently so easy to find (both Mellers and I have managed to refute this within 10 minutes). I'm sure there are a few people who will believe it, though....because it fits with their pre-existing beliefs.

None of you responded to Bob's contention regarding the $15,000 extra you pay for a Prius or the extra maintenance you pay on a Prius because they ARE so complex.

FYI: if you do a search on Google with "Prius problems" you get an idea of problems associated with the Prius.

You can drive your Prius in your own little dream world but reality is what it is!

BTW: We all understand your ego is attached to your Prius decision so you will NEVER admit you were wrong and the myth will go on and on!!!!

Feel good now!

I don't own a Prius, so I have no dog in this race. I do believe there are problems with the Prius - but if you google "5 year Prius cost" and "5 year Corolla cost," you'll see the costs aren't any higher. Or did you do a detailed analysis, like in the article I posted, and you personally found something different?

Why do you care if someone drives a Prius? Personal choice - don't want one don't get one.

I guess it's "no dog in this fight." But either way - I don't have one, so it's not a personal or ego thing. I drive a junky old 1994 Honda.

I have a friend with a Prius. I asked her all of these questions (because it's NOT the first time Bob has brought it up). She laughed, rolled her eyes, and told me how little she pays for repairs and maintenance to the point where I had car envy. Mechanics have had no problems fixing her car, the very few times something's gone wrong.

Current Toyota Prius starts at $24k. Run of the mill specs usually start at around $13k.

$15k may be a little exageration, but not off by that far.

At 45mpg/$4 per gallon, a Prius costs $8,900 in gas, to drove 100,000 miles.

At 35mpg/$4 per gallon, a run of the mill spec costs $11,400.

$2,500 savings over 100,000 miles doesn't come anywhere near close to covering the $13k initial outlay. Which is probably why they are still just a nich product.

Make that 11k difference in initial outlay costs (need an edit function!)

I did the math. I bought a Versa (Fits were nowhere to be found).

How ignorant are you compared to the average tree?.....oh sorry. I was just trying to carry on your irrelevant line of questions compared to the statistics you were somehow rebutting.

The ability of you to refute this in 10 mins is meaningless.

I have NO preconcieved notions just stateing facts.

My original contention was that over a period of 200,000 miles the Prius is very expensive. I used 200,000 miles because that is how long cars are running these days.

You may keep buying the Prius but it is important for people who are on a tight budget that the Prius IS VERY EXPENSIVE!

Daily Horoscope for June 4

Aries

Take care today Aries, because the emotional landscape in your neighborhood will be full of pitfalls during the coming fortnight, as it has been since the Solar Eclipse on May 20. The more convinced you are that you're right, the harder it will be to navigate your way around forthcoming events. If you feel resentful of someone, perhaps a neighbor or sibling, you need to get your feelings out in the open, rather than burying them deeper, where they'll fester and lead to more problems in the long run.
