So sad, the self-destruction of someone with the voice and face of an angel. Here's praying for her daughter.

Why is it that everyone is so mortified and sorry when a known drug abuser dies from her abuse? Whitney was a great talent and loved by millions but no-one loved her enough to intervene to save her life. We live in a sad time.

Whitney was a great talent and loved by millions but no-one loved her enough to intervene to save her life. We live in a sad time. The truth is that the only person who can clean up an addict is the addict herself. Interventions serve to wake the person up to how his/her behavior is hurting others, but ultimately it's up to one person and one person alone to fight the demon of addiction, and that is the addict. Also, I may be mistaken but I thought I had read that Whitney did clean herself up in 2009, but the pull of addiction is strong and this may have been a single relapse that took her. I don't keep up with music news or Hollywood gossip, but I have known and loved people who battled addictions. Some of them beat it, some are still fighting, and sadly some lost their lives to it.

I don't buy for one moment that an addict isn't influenced by love and someone who really loves them reaching out and helping them through their addiction, maybe taking them to Hazelden for example. We don't allow a stray dog to die in the cold, do we?

We don't allow a stray dog to die in the cold, do we? Hello, Bob. You've got a big heart and I see it's in the right place. However, influence only goes so far especially against a psychophysical addiction. Hazelden has some very good programs, but even with all their support and education, it is still up to the person to stay clean once they walk back out into the big scary world. The old saying, "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink" really fits here. You can teach an addict to clean up, but you can't make him stay clean. It's a painful fact for those of us who love someone who battles with addiction.
