Actually a company in Marshall (SW Minnesota) sells food items in grocery stores all over the United States. It started as Schwan's Delivery and now Red Baron, Tony's and Freshetta Pizza's all come from that Marshall, MN company. It has nothing to do with our Minnesota pirate fighter, but it does answer your question.

Hey Marty, enough grandstanding. What, your name hasn't been in the news enough this session? This is small potatoes with what's going on at the legislature. The clock is ticking down to the end of the session. You must have a budget agreement already then? Sit down with the democrats and hammer something out, then worry about somebody helping someone from their native country who's a teenage pirate. This is typical crap for the early part of the legislative session, not the end.

No, the principle is that the taxpayers of Minnesota shouldn't have to be paying for the legal defense of foreign nationals. Look it up.

I think they want him on probation driving a cab after he turns eighteen. He'll want to hold his cab passengers for ransom though.

Omar Jamal, director of the nonprofit Somali Justice Advocacy Center, said the parents of Abdiwali Abdiqadir Muse asked Jamal for help. Jamal said today he's not weighing in on the guilt or innocence of the teen, but his role is to help the family understand the legal system. "We act as an intermediary between the system and the community," Jamal said. "In this case we are trying to help the family understand what's going on here." He noted that because of the circumstances back in Somalia, the family thinks Muse could be executed by a firing squad." Ok...the parents live here, and their 16 year old son is/was back in Somalia as a pirate attacking American ships. Obviously the son, 16 or not, was emancipated from family control and functioning as an independent adult. Jamal, by hiring an attorney for the kid is "Helping the family understand" the legal system? Sounds like a bit of overkill. "Helping....." doesn't need to extend to securing representation. What really seems to be happening here is one Somali national assisting another despite the obvious crime against the "helper's" adopted country. So where do the loyalties lie? I also wonder about the family. Did they know of their son's activities? Did they benefit? We've got no information on that of course. This is one of the few times I agree with a Republican-despite the pressing priorities of the legislature and Seifert's potential motives, I wholeheartedly agree he did the right thing. This child/man is entitled to representation, of course, but not at taxpayer expense.

From the pirate attack, to the Navy taking charge, all the way through the trial, sentencing and jail time. And the Somali Justice Advocacy Center isn't funded by the Somali government or the Somali community. All the lawyers on both sides, the Court, Police protection and on and on, will all be paid for by us. It will be a multimillion $ expense. That's depressing when revenue is lacking. After this experience, I hope the snipers take one more shot instead of accepting surrender. The guy is a pirate. Next time, save everyone the time and trouble. Give the saying- take no prisoners- some real meaning.

While they're going after Omar Jamal, they should also go after Hennepin County Judge Steve Aldrich who lowered the bail of Ibrahim Abdullahi Mohamed, accused at shooting another Somali mail and then exchanging gunfire with the gang cops who arrested him. Judge Aldrich felt the $1 million bail was too harsh for attempted murder, so he lowered it to $50,000 which the defendant could make.
