Amen. IIRC up to half of the people in prison are there for non-violent drug related charges. Drug laws don't stop people from using drugs, drug use goes on in prisons. Drug laws keep prices high. How do you think those Mexican drug lords can afford better weapons than the Mexican army? Drug laws add a "forbidden fruit" factor to drug use, and create a culture of crime around their use.
If we were to legalize all drugs, we could produce them here, regulate them, tax them...this would help the economy and reduce crime.
I don't know that I am comfortable legalizing ALL drugs. Then you would have people arguing that the government needs to pay for rehab/CD counseling. I think we could start with pot and see how it goes. It would be cheaper, safer, a tax revenue source, jobs, etc. It is easier for most kids to get weed than alcohol. Drug dealers don't card people.

Pot is all but legal in CA.*Anybody* can go to a "pot doc" and for under $100 (some places as low as $40) get a recommendation for pot. There are more pot shops in LA than Starbucks. Don't know if it's cause and effect, but crime has *plummeted* in LA since the explosion in the number of pot shops.
As far as legalizing all drugs, I'd rather pay for rehab than prisons.

Colorado has also had a huge boost in the marijuana industry. It's just a matter of time until medical marijuana is legal everywhere. It has become too big in CA and CO for the feds to really do anything about it. I agree about paying for rehab rather than prison. It's crazy to see the statistics on how many "non-violent" drug offenders are clogging up our prisons and costing us money.

And when those people get out of prison, what can they do? Who is going to hire them? So, they are likely to turn to crime to make money.

Just look at all the pot shops and docs.
There are 28 pot shops in NoHo alone!
