I may be wrong, but I believe the issue is not in being called "American" but rather in being identified as "African-American". The article goes on to explain that many modern day black Americans are coming to the realization that they are so many generations removed from Africa that it doesn't really represent who they are as Americans. Also, not all black people have roots to Africa. In this nation, the common denominator and relevant adjective to identify oneself with regardless of skin color, is "American".
