Was this man in Tatum or just the Tatum area? Last week there was a report of an accident in Tatum but the victim was taken to Portales. Lovington would be the closer hospital from Tatum so everyone deduced that in fact that accident was probably closer to Dora or Milnesand than Tatum. So once again here we go with a news article that is not informative and is not much help to the people of the area.

In general, skunks have no interest in people, so to get bitten by a healthy one, you have to be really messing with them, AND be undeterred by the spraying.
However, Rabies attacks the brain, and makes them hypervigilant, which can make them more prone to biting. Still, I highly doubt it would just walk up to someone and bite them. Luckily, post-exposure prophylaxis is very effective. |

Did King Bill take a side trip to Tatum and bite someone?

1 I really suspect it was some closet Republican pi$$ed off because George W. Bush didn't get a third term by proxy. |

Since Bush is no longer in any of these equations, why bring him up? King Bill is a rabid skunk, and still infection NMs population. |

thank you you just saved my faith in New Mexicans... the skunk did sneak up on him... much better than someone trying to pet the skunk... my father once had to shoot a rabid skunk 6 times with a 20 gauge to get it to stop chasing him... even our dogs knew to run away and not mess with the thing... |

Is the skunk OK?

And Luis Caldera wasn't there to snap a picture of the whole thing!
Why on earth does someone get close enough to a skunk to be bitten by it? Can he expect to replace Luis Caldera at the White House? |

Has anyone seen my pet skunk, Bubba? He is gone and I miss him so much.

I'm not saying it can't happen, but, coming from a background in exotic rescue, it sounds off. Regardless, I hope the PEP works, and with minimal side effects. |

I tend to agree with you, any animal with rabies is very noticeable. They just don't act true to their nature so I wonder what has been left out of the story. |

I vote for the skunk. The "victim" had to have been messing with it.

Very true. Like I said, normally, skunks aren't interested in people. I recall many incidents back east, they would be walking along , just behind the tree line, when I would walk my dogs. Never had any incident. The one time I had anything happen was up by Denver. I was hiking and stopped to rest, and heard an angry chittering. Apparently, I 'd stopped too near to one's den, and it was asking me to leave. I left a granola bar as a peace offering and was on my way. Also have a friend who has a rescued orphaned skunk. She has had him since he was a tiny kit, and he's not descented, and has never sprayed. Tussles with her cat all the time, they are best buds. |

I have lived here all my life, mostly in the sticks where there are fewer people, and have seen quite a few animals with rabies. Only city folk, or someone too dumb to have learned anything, would not know the warning signs. And, if you get to close to ANY animals young, they will let you know it's time to move on! |

Oh lookie, a Daniel in Hobbs impostor. Are you so enamored with him you have to try to copy his name? |

Talk about bad luck. We have a real problem here in Santa Fe with infestations of mad cows and rabid skunks. It happens in mid January every year, and lasts for 30 to 60 days. |
