Derry to reduce MCRPD service

Don't blame them a bit. No need to be picking up the financial slack for the borough and their asinine move.

It's time for Lewistown to make the move to their own police service again not just cutting service. The Sentinel poll says most people want that to happen. Lewistown cuts service , now Derry cuts service, and then there is areas like Kistler which is way up the road thinking about joining MCRPD. I also believe that MCRPD is eyeing up Decatur twp. Remember MCRPD was in financial trouble right before they fired the chief. So is MCRPD done or will they be done just as soon as Lewistown pulls out. Milroy wrote yesterday as a response to another comment that this situation is now over and people are back to moving ahead. It doesn't look that way to me. If the reason for no police reports in the Sentinel was to make people think there is less crime here now to jusify reducing the police service, we will see how that works out. The attempted murder case might have you thinking differently.

Correct. Derry Twp has purchased more units than necessary for years in order to fund the department so MCRPD can adequately provide service. In short, Derry Twp carried Lewistown Borough.

And with Lewistown now deciding to purchase even less I don't blame them for bailing. I think the other municipalities should follow suit as well because they'll be not getting the coverage they purchased anyhow when officers have to be constantly pulled from their areas to run to Lewistown's aid due to the inadequate coverage in the borough.

I guess that could very well be possible since the Chairman of the MCRPD and the Derry Twp. supervisor is one of the same. Is that some of the special interest that causes so many problems in Mifflin County along with once mentioned so many Blood relatives?

Cut, cut, cut and fire, fire, fire. That seems to be the solution to everything in this hick county. Cut services and fire people. Fire the Chief and cut MCRPD. Fire Mr. Runk and cut the school budget.

It's like the school board candidates who talk about bringing back "the basics". What they are really saying is they want to fire teachers and turn the clock back.

As long as these kind of people are in charge around here, this county will never grow. Young people will continue to move out at an alarming rate.

Let me make sure I have this right. Derry spent almost $100,000 (3 x 30,000)every year for the past ? years just to be nice guys and help regional out!!! If I lived in Derry twp I'd sure be upset. That's alot of Derry twp. tax dollars wasted. Wonder which ones are up for election this year. They SURE need to clean house out there. Not sure which is worse, Lewistown cutting just to be horses rearends or Derry for their waste.

If and when these twp's and boroughs cut police service , how are these type of people going to make it through the day? Today a woman called 911 to report her grandkids age 10 and I forget what age the other one was ,but they were outside and wouldn't come in and they keep saying they hate her, big deal. Another incident right after that was a female up near Woods lane called to report someone broke into her car overnight and had stolen quote[a couple hunderd dollars] that she left laying on the seat. WOW, That's too bad. Why do police even respond?

People need to take control for their own small petty problems (like the kid won't eat his veggies). Maybe the answer is to have children and youth (county) take the kids from these namby pambies and put them in the care of people who know how to parent and will treat them like children and send them to bed until they can listen and obey. Sound harsh? Too bad. Call someone who cares.

Good point. Derry residents should be taking note of this public admission of abuse of funds and voting this clown out at the next opportunity! The arrogance of admitting it openly is amazing!!

I'd be pissed if I lived in Derry township and read this.

Yep. Parents need to be parents and be held accountable when they're not. Raising your child is nobody's responsibility but your own. If you're not capable then either us protection or abstain. We don't need anymore welfare cases in this town, we have quite enough.

The day is coming when Derry, Armagh, and Brown will have enough revenue to support the police department on their own. I agree that it isn't fair for Derry Township to carry Lewistown Borough's financial responsibility, but at the same time, having more police presence in Derry Township isn't an abuse of funds.

But did they actually have that extra presence they were paying for or was it all used up by the borough not purchasing enough?

I sure hope they had the extra presence. If I was a tax payer in Derry Township paying for extra patrol time in the Borough, I would be pretty ticked off; so I see your concern. The Borough wants to start their own police department and which they make sound like it will be the State College Borough Police. HAH. They will start a 5-8 man department with part time officers who don't know anything about Lewistown; and the residents will suffer immensely. Where is this "study" from Tom King anyway? It's passed the 60 day deadline they gave him.

I guess you only need to ask the people on Hummingbird lane or these other streets that had their vehicles broken into last night, how good of a job MCRPD. is doing?

Can you give me an example of a town with police that has NO crime? Even here in State College we have crime and our boro spends 10 times more than Lewistown can ever afford. I see that the opposite is true. Less police = more crime.

You're right. Maybe we should reduce police service so we have 1 patrol officer covering those streets. Or maybe we could do our research and find out that MCRPD arrested two people on a burglary in Lewistown last night. Now, to arrest and charge two people, it would take 2 officers. So if the two Lewistown officers are arresting and arraigning two people, who will cover the patrol? I guess the Derry Township cars should have came in and catered to the borough. Use your brain. Officers can't be everywhere at once, and when you have your new shiny Lewistown Borough Police Department, chances are good there will be even less patrol. I'm confused on which side you're on. More police, or less police?

You can't compare the top party school with Lewistown when your talking about crime, Top party means more crime. What did you say the population was in State College, Far greater than 10,000 right.

That's because I am not on either side more police or less police, just protect the citizens and their property. More is not always better. Obama is wanting to spend trillions, are you better off, Probably not unless you are a freeloader and the only thing that could happen to you is to get more for Free, so you will be better, but for most, spending more is not better. I don't want 20 policemen with 15 of them at the coffee shop.
