Great article. Too bad the Times -Standard doesn't keep the voters of Humboldt informed of important Government Legislation such as The Cap and Trade Bill, which just passed Congress and is a massive threats to the Freedoms that this magnificent flag stands for. Please, try and keep up with important National Legislation that will have huge impacts on daily life so that people can have time to contact their Senators and Representatives and voice their opinions and requests for action. Your newspaper lacks important information that the North Coast voters should be aware of to make our Government function properly. It is quite broken right now.

If it was not for Wes, who would have "stepped-up" to defend the right to fly a flag on a pole (Flag Pole) that County Supes and Planning aficianados were attempting to deny - all for tax dollars and service fees. So, in a sense, Freedom of Speech and Flag Bearing are conditional and not free because it has been proven yet again that money buys and releases for use ( a c.u.p.-esque process) freedom of speech and the sorts.

Brain Tease question: if a tree is a natural Flag Pole, will the county order a timber yield tax since the tree is yielding it's former use to a historic political use (freedom of speech and expression), lola - a tree sitting flag.

Wes, you are a good man to fly the American flag without the incessent greed for money like the growing list of incorrigible elected public officials!

Especially the Tri-Commission on the Health Reform Bill where it appears BOTH DEMS and REPUBS are going to "FORCE" ALL AMERICANS TO PURCHASE HEALTH INSURANCE. Get ready for an increase in the jails; and, tax lien sales on people's homes and property when they don't pay the $1,000+ fines for refusing to be robbed in order to pay for other people's health problems. The Feds are going to use county Health Departments so that they CAN STEAL your home and property through property lien sales - this country is bankrupt right now, not tomorrow. The U.S., State and local governments will be flat out stealing for dollars now. You have been warned!

Patriotism is still alive and well, it may not be popular in Arcata, but it is for those of us who get a charge when we see Old Glory gently unfurl in the morning breeze. I'm glad it's a part of our local landscape and hope it continues to be for many years to come.

Having lived here in McKinleyville for 9 years and appreciating the beauty of this flag every time I make a trip South, I was pleased to read about it's history in the T.S. this morning. Thank you!

Thank you Wes, I still salute the flag as I pass. As a veteran, the flag reminds me of friends that I met and lost during my service. Again, thank you Wes for bringing those memories back on a daily basis. By the way thank you taking care of my friend and his family that works for you (BM). He's talks very highly of you. You are a very respected man. PORTLAND

The only thing that bothers me is that when the flag gets tattered and torn it still flies. I think it should be replaced. It is quite massive/impressive in size, and should have a taller mast. I take out of towners by it when I can. You just don't see a flag that big any place any more!
I'd also like it if the California flag was flying below the stars and stripes.
Thank You Mr. Green for proudly waving Old Glory for us all to enjoy!

I know a gentleman for Kuwait. He told me his grandmother died at the hands of Hussein's Revolutionary Guards. She was diabetic and Hussein ordered his troops to remove all of the available insulin in Kuwait and bring it ti Iraq.

Sure, all of you liberals will clain he was desparate because of the sanctions.

The fact of the matter was Operation Desert Shield restored freedom and the quality of life in Kuwait. It's amazing how the liberals in Arcata support oppression all around the world.

Now Arcata is attempting to keep military recruiters out of Arcata. Never have such a large accumulation of imbeciles ever inhabited a hovel of Humboldt.

I just finished reading the article on the American Flag on Wes Green's property remembering how 18 years ago my sister, Jeanette Johnson and I were a part of the rally happening there for our troops. My oldest son was a Marine at the time and had heard of the protest in Arcata. He told me to go out there and support our troops, which I gladly did. In fact, I ended up being interviewed on the World News program and had friends all across America calling me regarding the interview. Jamie went on to serve in Desert Storm coming home safe. Now my youngest son is a Marine coming home on the USS New Orleans after his first deployment to the Middle East and my nephew, who is a medic in the US Army, getting ready for his 2nd deployment to the Middle Ease. I'm still supporting our troops who are serving this country. I'm very proud that the flag is still flying after all these years. We have alot to be thankful for. Please shake the hand of the next serviceman you see and thank them for the service they are giving this country. It could be my son's hand you are shaking!

Sir, the government has been stealing the people's money since it's conception.

This is nothing new.

If you're going to fly the California flag it best be upside down until the political party in power is changed out.

I too appreciate Mr. Green's flag and take pleasure in seeing it every time I pass by.

And I haven't made a purchase, other than gas one time, in Arcata since (1991).

An image of the flag would have been appropriate, given the date of the article. Some day the Times-Standard will get it all right in one story.

Just not this one.

Hey Arkkata.
Kuwait was slant drilling under Iraqs border for a long time stealing untold amounts of oil. Hussein asked them to please stop many, many times. He when turned to Bush Sr. asking if he could lick their a/s/s for ripping them off like that for so long.
Bush Sr. answered. " What do I care".
The rest of that happend was the other biggest set up in history..
Arkkata,, Did you know that ?

I love that big ol' flag. Haven't seen it since it was on the crane.
So glad it still there.

How about we fly a flag 50x 30 showing the dead babies that are a result of our beloved troops?

Daily Horoscope for December 20

Aquarius

This is another day when financial matters cause trouble, as Mars reverses in your seventh house. What started off as a minor niggle with a partner or an opponent yesterday could now escalate into a full-blown row, but at least this will give you the chance to get certain things out into the open. Legal issues from the past may become ugly. If you're pointing the finger of blame at someone, don't get so heated that you accuse them of everything under the sun.
