We have more monuments, schools, roads and other crap dedicated to the Civil Rights movement. When are we going to stop this? It seems nothing is enough when it comes to pleasing the Black community. We have many other things happen in this country, that never even get mention or given the credit they are due. The Japanese, the American Indian, The Chinese, The Irish and many more. All have give to this country in Blood and sweat. That’s why we are called AMERICA. Lets stop this singling out one group and start treating everyone equal.

I agree. Native American culture is virtually almost forgotten in terms of mainstream American culture.

We have statues of Robert E Lee and Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson in Richmond so a few reminders of civil rights era icons are not out of place in a majority black city. I am amazed that Virginia is in the forefront of progressive thinking and has even elected the nation's first black governor. Of course, most social ills from the past are best forgotten and should be swept under the rug. There are too many genocides, mass murders, and wrongs all over the world to be remembered, such as the enslavement of Slavs from Russian Georgia by the Muslims from Egypt. The Greeks and others who remember the attacks by the Turks after WWI and the Turks who remember the Greeks cleansing Turks before the Turks got the upper hand. Then the sad story of Japan and its doings in Korea and China which are still a sure fire way to spark anger. It is just that in America we like to beat ourselves over the head and make victims think they are still victims and that they do not have to work but are owed a living or at least forty acres and a mule. Sometimes I wonder even if they had forty arces and a mule if anybody would know what to do with them. Most black people who suffered from slavery and civil rights abuses who have made it on their own have liberated themselves from victimhood. The only victims today are those who wallow in selfpity and think the world is going to give them a living beyond the welfare check and food stamps. No matter what society does for these types, they will just spend everything on booze and drugs and demand more to soothe their feeling of victimhood. No amount of cement or words will make a difference.

Another waste of taxpayer's money.
It is spending like this that Kaine and his croonies use to demand higher taxes to pay for the so-called transportation shortfall.
Who's going to waste any money to buy gas to go and see a statue like this?

We can see how WELL all of this has worked! Give them equality and zillions of dollars in welfare and food stamps and they still won't put forth the effort to get an education, they would rather be "Keepin it Real" and living the "Thug Life"!!

I agree with most of what you say but there are no living slaves from 1865.

I left Richmond in 1984, and it was turning into the armpit of the South then.
