113 years ago today (June 19), my great great grandfather, Marion Jasper Dowling, died of malarial fever at his home in Kinsey, Alabama. He left behind six children from ages 18 to 1 year old.
I would be interested in hearing from anyone who is related to the Dowlings or knows about the history of this town.
Thanks - Steve

A business acquaintance of mine whose last name was Dowling, tragically died a few years ago. His grandfather R.A. Dowling was born in Dale County as was your great great grandfather. His mother owns a radio station in Dothan (WOOF-FM). Although she does not use the Dowling surname, a visit to their website reveals the Dowling connection. Please see the History of WOOF page and her late son's letter. She might be an excellent source to answer your questions.

Marion Jasper Dowling is listed as Marion Jackson Dowling in A DOWLING FAMILY OF THE SOUTH, along with his six children and his numerous grandchildren (Chart 561). Chart 331 traces back to HIS grandfather DEMPSEY, while Chart 101 goes back to DEMPSEY'S grandfather Robert. Robert emigrated in 1643.

Trying to locate some history about Dothan around 1889. My Grandmother Usry was born in Dothan then, but the family was not from there. I am trying to get some kind of idea why they would have gone to Dothan in that time period.
Thanks

The book A Dowling Family of the South is hard to come by. I have found a copy in the Enterprise Alabama library and there may be some others like that floating around. I have a copy and will be willing to copy any pages if you let me know what family member you're researching.

If you want to know the History of Kinsey try contacting The local Town Mayor or Chamber of Commerce if they have one it has been along time since I have been home. But that is the best way to find history and where to turn. They should have a way of finding old records or refer you so someone that can find court records such as Birth and Death Certificates.

i been reading abought the sewer rates increasing, well looks like its the same old thing: Chevy country and the Kinsey Apartments, and Kinsey Woods are the only ones that I am aware that are burdened with this increase. I do not think its fair to only burden this with a part of Kinsey and not all of it because it makes the ones that are mentioned above pay so much more and the ones that have lived here for yrs and arent in the above parts of kinsey do not pay this sewage hike, our mayor doesnt even have to pay his part. It has a sign up entering some of the roads coming into Kinsey: "Planned and Zoned for Growth"...who would want to live here or build here when the benefits of living in a bigger town offer so much more, and alot cheaper water rates and sewage rates. If any of you want to discuss this further, just give me a reply and we will reply back!

I heard abought your sewage rates in Kinsey, boy I am glad I live in Dothan. In addition i have done some inquiring abought your water rates they are high, and you only have a volunteer fire department, it must be hard on the residents with those bills. My water bill is small compared to yours and the rest of those that live up there. In my opinion what should be done is make the ones on septic tank need to pay the same fee as a town in whole. Why change the rates for just a few if you are an incorporated town, unless you are being discriminated against and that is not legal. You all need to join together, elect some officials that will be for the citizens not against them. I think that you could get in touch with somebody to check and see if your town is doing it all legally and if they are not hire a lawyer and seek legal advice. An annexation into Dothan in my opinion would be a good idea. I have no complaints with my survices such as: Police, Schools, Recreation and most of all my Fire Department.

I have been looking around, talking to a few freinds.Reading some signs and the next thing is when will our garbage fee go up in Kinsey? Our garbage i think is being taken to dothan landfill. Kinsey should make there own landfill next to their volunteer fire department.I am sure they should have extra money they just want to spend, maybe by spraying for mosquitos. Maybe those people that live on the outside of Chevy Country will have a nice view of a brand new landfill. Because we sure dont't want to leave anybody out!!

I think the town of kinsey alabama should go up higher and higher on all ther fees. that way the citizens will soon move out and maybe kinsey's population will be so low that dothan can takeover.

I talked to a few people and everone tells me kinsey garbage is being taken to city of dothan landfill. I took a ride out there and the man told me thats where it is taken, he also told me the price per ton is $38 per ton. Here is where it gets bad for kinsey if you have 2 garbage cans they throw the garbage in the truck when the truck is full they take it to landfill and weight the truck when it is full then subtract what truck weights empty, this is what the garbage weight is. So 2 garbage cans per house hold or 1-3(no limit) our fee is $15.00 dollars, 2 cans would not weight a ton. The price they charge per ton we are getting ripped off again. In my opinion the residents put out one to 2 garbage cans or bags to weight a ton, and being charged $15.00 per house!!! Do your math this is a rip-off!!

We have a group in Dothan and have been reading abought the problems in Kinsey. We hate to see people taken advantage of. In Kinsey what you all need is to impeach that mayor and get rid of those cops up there. We have heard how they operate, they do what they want to do. Maybe a letter to the State of Alabama will let them do some looking at whats going on. We have friends that are trying to help tell the people about high rates on everything, telling them not to buy or rent until they check out what they would have to pay to live up there.

You need to get ready to check those septic tanks, get them in good shape. If it has been three to five years get it pumped out check for deterioration. Also make sure you get a certified inspector to make sure no cracks and no leakage were you wont contaminate the soil causing hazard to humans. Make sure you have one that is the right size for the number of people it serves also make sure it is large enough for the size of house its serving.
