FOR A BETTER PART OF MY LIFE, I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN THE MIDDLESBORO AREA.
NEVER DID TAKE NOTICE OF A FEW TRIPS I MADE BACK TO THE MIDDLESBORO AREA, BUT THE LAST TIME I CAME THROUGH, I WAS TOTALLY DISGUSTED OF HOW RUN-DOWN THE NATIONAL PARK IS NOW.
I ASKED AROUND AND WAS TOLD BY RELIABLE SOURCES THAT THE NATIONAL PARK WAS TRYING TO BRING THE PARK BACK TO HOW IT MAY HAVE LOOKED IN THE EARLIER DAYS. WELL THEY DID JUST WHAT THEY INTENDED TO DO.
BUT WHY NOT ESCAVATE THE VERY FEW BUILDINGS THAT REMAIN IN THE NATIONAL PARK, SUCH AS THE ADMINISTRATION BUILDING OR MAIN BUILDING FOR STARTERS. DONT WANT TO BURST SOMEONE'S BUBBLE ON THIS, BUT I DOUBT VERY SERIOUSLY IF ANY OF THE BUILDINGS ON THE PARK GROUNDS AT THIS MINUTE, WERE THERE IN THE EARLIER DAYS. SO THIS IS TOTALLY STUPID IF THEY WANT TO BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL LOOK OF THE PARK, WITHOUT REMOVING THESE BUILDINGS AND CLOSING DOWN THE PARK. LETS FACE IT, THE NATIONAL PARK LOOKED BETTER WHEN IT WAS WELL-KEPT AND THE LAWNS WERE KEPT MANICURED ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK, ESPECIALLY WHEN ENTERING THE PARK.
SO THEREFORE THERE WAS AN ALTERIOR MOTIVE FOR LETTING THE GROUNDS REVERT BACK AS THEY WERE IN THE EARLIER DAYS.
FIRST AND FOREMOST, SOMEONE WOULD JUMP TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THESE RANGERS ARE JUST TOO LAZY TO DO THE UPKEEP OF THE PARK. THERE MAY BE ONE OR TWO, BUT I BELIEVE THERE MAY BE ANOTHER REASON.
MONEY AND POWER ARE THE REASONS. MARK MY WORD.
IVE NEVER BEEN GIVEN A TICKET BY THESE PARK RANGERS, LET ALONE A TICKET FROM ANY OF THE FINE MEN OF THE MIDDLESBORO POLICE DEPARTMENT.
THEY SAW A WAY TO BRING MONEY INTO THE NATIONAL PARK. NOT TO SUPPORT THE PARK NECESSARILY. THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DOES A GOOD JOB AT THIS. FROM WHAT I CAN TELL, THE NATIONAL PARK CAN DO ANYTHING THEY WISH WITH THE PROCEEDS COMING FROM THE ISSUANCE OF TICKETS. WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE REALLY SPENDING THIS MONEY ON.
TRUE THE NATIONAL PARK IS A FEDERAL AGENCY AND IN MANY CASES, THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SUPERCEDES THE AUTHORITY OF ANY STATE OR LOCAL AUTHORITIES.
SO WHY DOESNT ALL NATIONAL PARKS DO AS THIS NATIONAL PARK IS DOING? EVER SEEN THE MOVIE "POLICE ACADEMY", WHERE THE LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENT BEGAN RECRUITING UNTRAINED PEOPLE OUT OF THE COMMUNITY?
THESE PARK OFFICIALS MAY HAVE HAD SOME TRAINING IN ONE OF THOSE BUILDINGS ON THE PARK GROUNDS, BUT THE TRAINING IS FAR FROM WHAT THEY NEED TO WORK PATROLS ON HIGHWAY 25 E. A HIGHER STANDARD SHOULD BE SET. THESE PARK RANGERS SHOULD STICK TO THE JOB THEY WERE FIRST HIRED TO DO. MAINTAIN THE NATIONAL PARK AND LET THE MIDDLESBORO POLICE DO THEIR JOB.
I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THIS NATIONAL PARK GO BACK TO THE WELL-KEPT NATIONAL PARK IT WAS BEFORE THE RANGERS THERE GOT SO WRAPPED UP IN WANTING MONEY AND POWER. THE NEXT THING WE WILL BE HEARING WILL BE THAT THE BOY SCOUT TROOP FROM MIDDLESBORO WILL BE ISSUING TICKETS AROUND MIDDLESBORO.
IM GOING TO BE WRITING MY LETTER TO THE NATIONAL PARK SYSTEM HEAD OFFICE IN WASHINGTON, ALONG WITH A LETTER TO CONGRESSMEN AND SENATORS, NOT JUST FOR THIS AREA, BUT ANYONE ON THE APPROPRIATION COMMITTEE. IF THE NATIONAL PARK IN MIDDLESBORO WANT TO MAKE MONEY, LET THEM DO IT THE OLD FASHION WAY. SET UP A LEMONADE STAND ALONG 25 E.
TURN THIS NATIONAL PARK BACK TO THE NATIONAL PARK IT WAS FIRST INTENDED TO BE. YELLOWSTONE PARK HAS NOT ALLOWED THE WEEDS TO GROW IN THAT PARK. IF THE NATIONAL PARK SYSTEM IN THE WASHINGTON D.C. AREA DOES NOT ADOPT THIS IDEA OF TURNING THINGS BACK TO THE WAY IT LOOKED MANY YEARS AGO, THEN WHY ALLOW THIS NATIONAL PARK IN MIDDLESBORO BECOME SET A BAD EXAMPLE. GIVE US A NATIONAL PARK WE CAN BE PROUD OF. START MOWING THAT GRASS AND MAINTAINING THE GROUNDS INSTEAD OF LETTING MOTHER NATURE DO IT FOR YOU.
IM DISGUSTED AND EVERYONE IN THE MIDDLESBORO AREA SHOULD BE DISGUSTED AS WELL. IF WASHINGTON D.C. CAN KEEP THEIR GROUNDS CLEAR OF BRUSH AND WEEDS, THEN WE IN MIDDLESBORO SHOULD DEMAND THE SAME ATTRACTIVE GROUNDS FOR OUR PARK.

It's not about manicured lawns and trimmed bushes. You don't get it do you? You need to stay at the mall or on the golf course...

What....the lawn is not being mowed on the center grounds and entrance?

Why...what is so "natural" about that? You've got the ENTIRE park to not mow and leave "natural."

Sounds kinda silly not to just keep the management and visitor parking / entrance areas neat.

That just shows the place is well run.

IT NEVER EVER FAILS....YOU WRITE SOMETHING ON HERE AND PEOPLE WILL TRY THEIR BEST TO PUT YOU DOWN. YOU PEOPLE SOUND LIKE YOU'RE THE TYPE OF PEOPLE, THAT IF SOMEONE GETS ON HERE TO GIVE THEIR CONDOLENCES TO ONE OF YOUR YOUNG SONS OR YOUNG DAUGHTERS PASSING AWAY DUE TO AN UNFORTUNATE CAR ACCIDENT, ALL OF YOU WOULD GET ON HERE AND PUT DOWN THE ONE WHO OFFERS THEIR CONDOLENCES.

HOPE THERES SOMETHING THAT HAPPENS IN YOUR LIFE SOON, WHERE YOU MAY GET AN OCCASIONAL CONDOLENCE, SO THAT I CAN PUT THEM DOWN EQUALLY.

TO UMMHMM, NO MATTER HOW YOU PAINT THE PICTURE, YOU STILL PAINTED THE VERY SAME PICTURE I MADE. THAT IS CALLED "COPYING" AND DOING THE VERY SAME THING. YOU FOOL.

TO ALL THOSE PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT DOES NOT LIKE TO SEE ALL CAPS. FIRST OF ALL, TRY TO MAKE ME TYPE OTHERWISE. CANT CAN YOU? YOU'RE PATHETIC AS WELL AS STUPID FOR THINKING THAT ALL CAPS MEAN THAT SOMEONE IS SCREAMING AT YOU. FOR PEOPLE WHO THINK THIS, YOU NEED YOUR HEAD EXAMINED.

OH HAZEL, I WANT YOU TO TELL EVERYONE TO THEIR FACES, THAT WERE BORN IN MIDDLESBORO, GREW UP IN MIDDLESBORO, BUT LEFT DUE TO A HOST OF DIFFERENT REASONS IN THE WORLD. YOU TELL THEM FACE TO FACE THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED TO EVER COME BACK. PEOPLE LIKE YOU SHOULD SIT IN JUDGEMENT ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF GOD. OR AT LEAST YOU SEEM TO THINK SO.

IF YOU WERE TO TELL PEOPLE THAT, THEY WOULD SLAP YOU IN THE FACE. WHO ARE YOU TO TELL PEOPLE WHO GREW UP IN MIDDLESBORO AND WHO LEFT AFTER MANY YEARS OF LIVING THERE, THEY ARE NOT WELCOMED BACK. YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT ALOT OF PEOPLE. FROM THE LOOKS OF IT, SEEING THAT YOU HAVE LEFT AS WELL, PERHAPS YOU ARE ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO CANNOT COME BACK YOURSELF, DUE TO A WARRANT OUT FOR YOUR ARREST. JUST BECAUSE YOU CANNOT EASILY COME BACK TO MIDDLESBORO, DOES NOT MEAN THAT OTHERS CANNOT COME BACK....YOU FOOL.

YEAH, IF YOU ARE A FOOL, THEN DONT EXPECT SOMEONE NOT TO CALL YOU ONE.

A SLOPPY AND UNKEPT NATIONAL PARK SHOULD BE CALLED THAT.

AGAIN, MOST OF THE SCENERY AROUND WASHINGTON D.C. IS CONSIDERED A NATIONAL PARK. WHY NOT ALL OF YOU CONTACT OFFICIALS IN WASHINGTON AND ASK THAT THEY ALLOW ALL THEIR BUSHES AND WEEDS TO GROW THERE AS WELL.

THE BOTTOM LINE, TOURISTS MAY COME TO MIDDLESBORO AND VISIT THE NATIONAL PARK THERE, BUT I DOUBT MANY WILL EVER RETURN, WHETHER THE PARK TELLS YOU THEY DO OR NOT. I WOULDNT WANT TO AND I BELIEVE MOST OTHERS WOULD NOT WANT TO. OF COURSE, YOU FOOLS WILL SAY YOU WOULD. THAT IS TYPICAL FOR A FOOL TO DO THIS.

IM BEING TRUTHFUL ABOUT THE WAY THE PARK LOOKS. IF YOU BELIEVE THE PARK LOOKS BETTER THE WAY IT DOES, YOU'RE LYING OUT OF YOUR TEETH AND YOU KNOW IT. THEREFORE, ALL OF YOU SHOULD BE CALLED FOOLS.

I don't think Melissa understands that this is a National Historic Park. It has a budget set by the federal government and the Park Superintendant works within in that. If you have been watching our economy during the past decade I think you will agree that everyone has to cut back do to a lack of revenue. Preserving history in the Cumberland Gap is the biggest priority. I spent a week in Washington D.C. this year and must conclude that it has been some time since you visited there. I also don't think you spent much time at the awesome camp ground we have or hiking the beautiful trails. There is a nice visitor center with clean restrooms and and an oustanding view from the Pinnacle when you make that short trip! I love it just as it is. I don't need a multi million dollar complex to enjoy the history and natural beauty of Cumberland Gap.

Then String Bean, why dont you move off into the wilderness somewhere.

True, the National Park system has their own budget to deal with, but all the National Parks have to deal with it, not just the one in Middlesboro.

Why are they not letting the bushes and weeds grow up in all the other National Parks, so dont try to tell me its because of the money allocated for their budgets.

Remove the buildings in this National Park and Ill believe in the Easter Bunny.

Sure, if you look past the thicket, the overgrown bushes and all those weeds, you may be able to see a wonderful sight from the Pinnacle, but as you may well know, you are looking beyond the National Park and not hardly anthing in the park.

So where is your defense now.

The Park Rangers are just lazy or they just want to play cops. And for sure, not federal cops.

You disgust me with your weak reasons.

get a life.. our economy is in trouble... who cares if the national park doesn't mow or spray weeds as often. They keep their trails clean and picnic areas clean so that makes me as a citizen happy.

It doesnt take a moron to know what makes you happy.

The same about using a public restroom. You dont care if theres poop all over the toilet seat, just as long you can sit there and add to the poop.

Along the same reasoning.

Again, if they are going to receive funds as the other National Parks are to keep the park clear of these over grown bushes and over grown weeds, they should use these funds for this.

No one has ever said the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park gets less in funds than the others. Porportionate to the number of tourists passing through perhaps. If this is the case, I wonder how much federal money they will get with about two hundred tourist for this year.

With the over grown bushes and over grown weeds, there will be less and less and less tourists.

Stop trying to defend your next door neighbor, a park ranger. We can see right through you.

WHY NOT CONTACT THE MIDDLESBORO GARDEN CLUB AND TELL THEM, PERHAPS THEY WILL IMPORT SOME WEEDS FROM AROUND YOUR HOUSE.

One of my favorite trails has two huge dead trees laying across the trails. You cant ride a bike on the trail bc of this. Been this way for months. Wish they would remove these logs. I'd do it myself but Id get a ticket. Other than that I love the NP.

LEAVE THE TWO HUGE DEAD TREES ALONE.
WHAT BETTER WAY TO BRING THIS PARTICULAR NATIONAL PARK TO ITS ORIGINAL STATE.
JUST WISH TWO HUGE DEAD TREES WOULD FALL ACROSS THE MAIN ENTRANCE OF THE PARK.
IF THE PARK RANGERS MOVE THE DEAD TREES, THEN THEY ARE GOING AGAINST THEIR OWN IDEA OF BRINGING THE PARK BACK TO ITS ORIGINAL STATE.
IF THE PARK RANGERS DO NOT MOVE THE DEAD TREES, THEN THEY MAY SAVE FACE TO THEIR PLAN TO BRING THE PARK BACK TO ITS ORGINAL STATE.
BUT OF COURSE, THE ADMINISTRATOR MUST BRING THEM IN OFF THEIR 25 E PATROL. HEY ADMINISTRATOR, WHAT IF THEY WANT TO KEEP UP THEIR PATROLS?

Is there any type of organization...like "Friends of Cumberland Gap Park" or something like that?

The Smokies have "Friends of the Smokies" and are pretty organized.

They are volunteers who coordinate with park management and maintain the a lot of the trails that regular employees cannot get to (due to budget restrictions or whatever).

Anyway....maybe the the CG park has simply had budge cutbacks and don't have the funding to keep thing up as much as usual.

Why doesn't somebody check that out (if ya want to, that is)

I don't live there....I just look over this forum from time to time, b/c of the Large amount of QUALITY posts and discussions.

Park Rangers don't cut grass or trim trees. The National Park has a maintenance crew that does all of that. If you are riding bikes on the trails it would be a good idea to stay on the one leading from the Daniel Boone parking lot on the Virginia side of the mountain going out to the camp ground. This is the only trail available to ride on. I think that there is some confusion about plants that are growing in front of the Visitor Center and along the front facing the highway. Many of the plants are there as an educational tool. Most have small signs close to the ground with useful information. A lot of schools in the area bring students here to use this in when teaching about the diverse plant life in the area. I find the trails to be in very good shape most of the time and sometimes come across a tree down but not very often.

Budget Cut's, Yea that's what it is not enough money to go around. All the politican's for the park service might lose a Dime. So all the ragweed's that's growing is really a historic weed. The kid's that live around here know's every plant that grows. They don't need school's or Park Ranger's to tell them. Grandpa an Grandma can tell them. It's a money thing!!!

Now if this is the way this particular National Park is going to run things.

If an old tree falls down onto a trail, right in the middle of the trail......

Im going to get very steamed if someone tries to move that old tree.

If the Park people want the Park to revert back to its original state, then they should not do anything to clean anything up.

No exceptions. Trash, trees, road kill.

You may also be reading too much into the situations that are going on around you, making it hard for you to know what's really happening.
