The expansion of Jacksonville's human rights ordinance slated to be discussed at tonight's City Council meeting has an unusual coalition of support, including both liberal Democrats and members of the business community.

Last night was awesome. 90% in favor of passing and the opposition looked as foolish as ever.

After watching and reading a few of the accounts of last night's events at City Hall, I wonder if I was at the SAME meeting. The PRESS is always suspect...please remember that. OVER 90% of the speakers were in favor of the bill and they were polite, well dressing, well spoken and behaved. The opposition to this bill is like watching a drowning man who is putting on a life jacket made of cement.

Judged: 1 I'm still trying to understand why the government has to force people to not discriminate. I'm starting to think that this is just a way to punish those who are ignorant or have different beliefs and award those simply because they were discriminated against. EVERYONE is discriminated against. I'm a full supporter of gay rights, meaning they should have the right to marry and all the other privileges provided by the constitution. But don't they already? The government can't prohibit speech of gays but not others, right? Regarding marriage or tax issues, why not just get government out of the way? Let people marry whoever they want. Why does the state have to be involved? To think that these laws actually achieve any fundamental change in our culture is ridiculous. It's actually probably worse today because people are too scared to even talk about race. One way, of many, to solve this problem is for government to stop creating laws that discriminate against one group of people to another. All they are doing is supporting the idea that discrimination is ok. We can't discriminate based on race, sex, or sexual orientation but we can discriminate based on how one is dressed, how good looking they are, how much money they have, how they talk, how much money they have, how intelligent they are, how many friends they know, if they have children or are married, and a plethora of other factors. I suppose you can't control these factors though, right? I mean, I can choose to be good looking and I can choose to be rich. I guess I just have to try a little harder... |

Judged: 2 1 So according to your logic if Jacksonville is not homophobic then they probably aren't against Christians or blacks either. What would you say about taking gender, RELIGION, and race off the protections? What would you do if someone fired you for being a Christian or because you are a man? Would you report them and sue them based on religious discrimination or would you just let it happen and work for another employer who accepted you as a Christian. If 90 percent of the people are for protecting gays why would it hurt to have a law that protects them, bi people, and straight people along with gender, religion, and race? It seems to me like this bothers you a bit. The government and state are the ones that give benefits to married couples. They have to be involved. Are you willing to give up them being involved in your heterosexual marriage even if they said to you it might recognized in your eyes and your church's eyes but that they won't give you and your spouse any legal recognition. It is easy for you to say all this stuff you said when you are not the minority being discriminated against because it doesn't affect your life but it seems to bother you that they made soon have protections from discrimination. Jacksonville is discriminatory towards gays and that is why we need this law. The nation needs a law like that and the federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act. |

Judged: 1 1 1 Find biased action distastful ... eh? So you DO see the issue . What a surprise! Affirmative action allows an inferior performing female or Negro to be hired/promoted or admitted to med-school ahead of a superior performing white male. But, you oppose such bias ... eh and reject affirmative action! Welcome to the club. |
