Because this country (USA) has a tradition since its founding of separation of church and state.

Do whatever you want in yor own home, not in a public place. have a party at your house, invite everyone. decorate the lawn with candy canes.
This is not a debate of feelings, tradition. it's a constitutional issue , ike in the US Constitution.

Why do people insist on stating "separation of church and state" in the context of the Constitution. There is no place in the document that states a separation of church and state. The first amendment prohibits the government from creating or establishing a religion.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

I couldn't agree more w/Mrs. McMillan and Mrs. Cullen. This is over the top PC! However, my discomfort with the Gift Room is this: do you all realize that the school administrators have decided that it's okay for our students to miss valuable educational time on learning to "shop" at a fundraiser for the school? That is what the promotional fliers call it: shopping! Send your kid to school with cash or a blank check on their class's shopping day. This is not an after-school, optional fund-raising event. It is during school, with each class being paraded down to the Gift Room to shop for family members and friends. It is specifically set-up this way. Of course it's a popular event w/the kids -- it's like going to the dollar store in the middle of the school day! My teacher takes me and my class to the dollar store, and it's in my school! My parents give me money to buy stuff! Of course I love it!(But at the dollar store I could buy something Hanakah or Christmas-y if I wanted.) And if my parents don't give me money or they don't want me to shop at the Gift Room, I can sit in the office and do a coloring page while the rest of my class goes shopping -- I shouldn't feel bad though, because the office staff have something for me to do!
I'm all for school fundraising, but not during school hours when kids are taken from their classrooms to go shopping, whether it's for trinkets at the Gift Room or helping to line the pockets of Scholastic, Inc. during the Book Fairs. These fundraising events should be after-school events. And as far as I'm concerned, have as many Santas and menorahs as you like.

The Christmas controversy at the Byam school is a disgrace. What in the world is wrong with people. My kids went to Byam in the 80's. My husband's uncle, Dan Horgan, was principal there. I cannot believe that this school is now banning Christmas. Hello??? There are lots of religious holidays. Every one is just as important as another. No one can argue faith or politics. The definition of faith is:"belief that is not based on proof". If something is not based on proof--hello?? It cannot be proved. You cannot force your beliefs on others. Believe what you want. Let others believe what they want. Stop trying to convince people that your beliefs are better than theirs. I am an athiest. I celebrate Christmas and any other holiday that anyone wants to celebrate because ya know what, we need to celebrate and stop bitching.
Life is toooooo short.

Its actually a debate about learning. Yes we are not suppose to teach religion in school but we are suppose to teach children about different cultures, so that they will be open minded. But instead people like the person below want to make children narrow minded and keep them from learning about other cultures. Just because its not math or english doesnt mean that its not worthy of learning. That is why they are in school......TO LEARN

Daily Horoscope for December 23

Pisces

Someone is in a very boisterous mood today, and you may want to make yourself scarce after a short spell in their company. Their idea of a joke may be your idea of extreme rudeness, or they could take pleasure in being argumentative just for the sake of it. Don't let this person wind you up or you'll go off pop through sheer tension.
