There is so much ignorance in here and it's really unfortunate. You guys really should have some common sense. Rather to say you don't think that not many alumni from Hempstead have gone on to great professions as if you can can't them on 2 hands is an insult and also tells me that you don't know too many minorities at all. That must've been some pathetic life you guys have lived.

Rex, why compare Hempstead students to Jericho? Why not Jericho to Pat-Med or Jericho to Oyster Bay or Calhoun? Would you get the same results there too? You are making no sense at all.

For years all we have heard is the reason for failing schools is the inferior facilities or lack of textbooks. The state just keeps throwing more money into the failed schools as if that is going to be the cure for the poor educational record. My experiment would see if it is really about money or about students.
As for using Jericho, ok use Wantagh, Bellmore, Oceanside, Baldwin, any school with over a 51% graduation rate.

The failures do not come from money or lack of money in the schools.

The problems come from bad poorly evolved people.

Every Long Island neighborhood that has gone minority is riddled with crime and violence and welfare grabbers.

Yeah, it's a coincidence, right?

Why are you making this out to be a minority issue? Education is not ethnically, religiously or populous biased in any way. All people can learn. You think we should have common sense and that’s fine. Common sense tells me to look at the high school in question (Hempstead) and compare it with other local high schools which I have done (Plainedge). How about we compare it with Seaford, Levittown, Merrick, East Meadow and Lynbrook? They’re all local districts within Nassau County and a fair representation of the population. None are considered to be elitist towns, in fact, they are average communities with average folk living average lives.
You think we’re pathetic for commenting the way we are about Hempstead. I’m willing to bet that Balto, Rex and myself are all high school graduates and went on to college with the hopes of having successful lives. It looks like we all did because we can comment of the poor performance of Hempstead and know the difference.
Now, tell us why it’s a big deal when Hempstead High breaks a 51% graduation barrier when the majority of districts are nearly double that. Tell us why when all buildings and books are created equal and the teachers in NYS all must meet the same standards and get the same license that the students in Hempstead have a problem getting an education.
I’ve previously asked you to name what you stated to be the “thousands Hempstead high grads who got into great professions from Wall Street to Doctors as well as lawyers and realtors and many other professions”. Do you care to reply to that or should we think you’re blowing hot air?

Did you know that Hempstead high was the school of the year on Long Island in 1980? The question should be why did it decline so drastically from their.

Wonderful!!! You added three to my one for a total of four. You mentioned there were “thousands” and as a result, there are only 996+ to go. Who ranked Hempstead High as “school of the year” in 1980? Proof, please.
Why have you not answered any of my previous inquisitions?
I’ll quote myself and possibly, you’ll reply.“Now, tell us why it’s a big deal when Hempstead High breaks a 51% graduation barrier when the majority of districts are nearly double that. Tell us why when all buildings and books are created equal and the teachers in NYS all must meet the same standards and get the same license that the students in Hempstead have a problem getting an education.”
Please, concentrate and answer the questions.
Do you really have that much of a problem admitting that Hempstead is a schitthole?

There are thousands of people who have gotten out of Hempstead High to become productive citizens in various professions. I mentioned 3 names and I can list more. The fact is those are more than you give credit for. Newsday granted Hempstead High the school of the year on Long island in 1980. There were also years that Hempstead (post white flight) excelled over the New York state average in Physics. Instead of insulting the town of hempstead school district and every student that ever went there why don't you stop being lazy and do your own research and learn with your unbiased eye individual accomplishments.

And as far as you, yourself, bragging about going to college after High school (which I doubt but you get the benefit anyway) it is quite apparent that even naive fools can get a college degree.

This was a story about kids graduating from high school. Some kids were smiling because there's a good story about their school and their town. You get overaged bozos like the 3 of you (2 of you got out of hs in 1966), and to have the nerve to bash high school kids and attempt to tear this story to shreds.

First, let's think about how embarrassing this is. If you graduated in 1966 from high school, that should make you at least 61 years old. You are past the golden age!! You should be focusing on your authritis instead of bashing kids. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Can you think of anything better to do than to bash 17 and 18 year olds who just graduated from high school and just about to experience life in the work force? Was your life that sorry that you can't think of anything better to do or say? This is equivalent to a 61 year old man throwing a rock at someones window and running!!

Even if you aren't 61, you admitted that you are a full grown adult who claim to have gone to college. What a great example you are showing!!!

Pathetic at its worst!!

If you want to go on thinking Hempstead is a top-notch school, feel free. I never knew that when the number of graduates just crossed the 50% range that there’s reason to celebrate.
You still avoided answering direct questions so whatever else you state is baseless.
Go Hempstead!!!

I was a product of Hempstead Public Schools, when it was a great district. In 1971, I returned to Hempstead to student teach and was APPALLED by the change. Don't call us racist, call us realists who have enough history with the district and village to have seen the decline. All the bleeding hearts always cry that minorities get a second hand education. Wake up! Education is not a priority in their homes because their parents are depending on government schools to do the job for them, just like they depend on the government to pay for their food, medical needs, etc. Why work for something when it will be handed to you on a silver platter. I wouldn't be surprised either if the schools' administration and staff are affirmative action recipients who can't write a coherent sentence. This explains the 51% graduation rate. Unless you've "experienced" Hempstead, stop preaching to us. BTW, my brother graduated with Paterson, and said he was a jerk then too.

I heard that at last year's graduation ceremony, the principal regrettably informed the class and their families that HHS's star quarterback was not going to graduate due to poor test scores....but then after the crowd's uproar he offered to ask the young man one question and if could answer it then he could graduate with the class. Well he asked the young man, "What's capital of the USA?" and the young man said "New York". The crowd went crazy and yelled "Give him another chance". The principal then asked "What 5 x 5?" and the kid said "50" and the crowd yelled "Give him another chance". The principal relented and said "What is 10 x 10?" and the kid said "100" and the crowd yelled "Give him another chance"....

Ever try rationalizing an issue with a brick? I just explained the Hempstead situation to one on my porch and it grasped the concept in only five minutes.
So there's the proof that bricks are more easily taught than Hempstead students and Wow.

Herein lies the problem. The blame game, with the authority figures as the enemy, and no responsability placed on our poor "victims." This is the new "lib" society, that doesn't blame the parents or the individual, but instead "the man." Now the article on the homeless girl in Cali going to Harvard is a great heartlifter....this is just BBQ starter.
IF you knew anything about Hempstead's school district...you would know when the parents who do their job as parents most are either 'used' as pawns or 'stepped on/over'. This school district only honors those parents who go along with their program....those who look the other way at the expense of so many other children. You have got to live it or have lived it in order to KNOW what taking responsiblity means in Hempstead's school district. When a parent and their children are labelled "trouble makers" because the parent doesn't agree with the misuse of funds or the way children are taught and what they are taught, then you can talk about 'taking responsibility'. When parents are being conned to the true status of their children's grades...then you can talk about 'taking responsiblity'. When parents tell teachers and administration that their children are obtaining a quality education by repeating in class things which were taught the year before for weeks.....then you can talk about 'taking responsiblity'. This district is 'all show' and 'no class'. It should have been closed years ago and parents allowed the funds to send their children else where.
