Shawnee Mayor's race

“I just don't think (Meyers) has done enough”

The Shawnee Mayor's race might end up being a contest over who can best promote economic growth and keep city taxes down.

The two issues have driven Councilmember Dan Pflumm to challenge current Mayor Jeff Meyers for the position. Pflumm has said he can encourage more economic development in the city and reduce property taxes better than his opponent has.

'We just have not experienced a lot of commercial development,' Pflumm said. 'I think the city can do a lot better job.' But Meyers disputes that claim, citing new retail projects like a Best Buy and a Wal-Mart store planned for the city. Read more

Woo-hoo our city is getting a walmart! Somehow
I don't think people will be dancing in the street with
that one unless they're holding protest signs. This is
hardly something the mayor should be boasting about.

I live in eastern shawnee:
where is the new developement on our side of the city. Western Shawnee is getting all of the new stores and business and we on the eastern side get nothing. If it were'nt for eastern shawnee, there would be no western shawnee. Dont forget about us and our "curb and sidewalkless streets".

I live in eastern shawnee. What about us, in all of this developement sceme. We got all of the "tool" stores. We have streets with only ditchs and no curbs or sidewalks. If it were'nt for eastern "old shawnee" there would be no western shawnee. Hello, we still live here too.

Isn't there already a WalMart just down SMP, and a WalMart grocery store on 75th? What the heck do we need another WalMart for? So even more of our citizens can work for peanuts and be taken advantage of by this soulless behemoth?

I'll be spending as much at the new WalMart as I do at any other...$0. I encourage others to do the same.

Support small, local businesses. It's the only way to grow and keep money in Shawnee!
