Well, sadly it appears that Mr. McCalmon passed on this morning. I encourage all of the city residents to start contacting the Mayor and City Council members and demanding that they do their job and begin looking for a real City Manager. The City is no different than any large business, and it needs a trained professional running things on a day to day basis, not an unqualified good-ol-girl who only looks out for herself and her family.

How about letting the body get cold first. Jesus, the city is not going to disappear over night. Show a little respect will ya.

He was a sweet old guy and was always nice to those he met. I had no idea he was the city manager when I knew him. He and a friend would come into a place I liked to have lunch in and they were very interesting to speak with. I hate to hear he has passed as I hated to hear his friend had passed. They seemed like they must have been friends from childhood. Both so intelligent and friendly. Please offer your condolences here and don't disrespect his memory.

Just learned of the passing of Mr. McCalmon. I worked for this good man when he was city manager of Phenix City, Al 14 years ago. When we last spoke a few months back he was the same caring person I knew from the past. His accomplishments in Phenix City were many and lasting. My prayers go out to his children and dear wife, Mrs. McCalmon.

obviously you never worked for the man if called him sweet or caring. i would use words like OPPRESSIVE, DOMINEERING and CALLOUSED. i will say what most are too sympathetic to say but are feeling and thinking; he may have been a wonderful a caring person, but not to the employees of the city of summerville! if you dont believe me, give it a year then ask for honest opinions.

Well, I'd say that there are a few that feel that way, but I think that most of those who feel that way are the people who were more interested in collecting their check than doing their job. The problem is that we have a Mayor and Council who have never had to actually manage anything, because they had a real manager taking care of the day-to-day business. Now we are faced with the prospect of them letting the most unqualified, crooked person in the city take over as City Manager. Surely I'm not the only one who remembers everything that went on several years ago. I'd just like to know how it is that this woman is not only still employed by the city, but is still allowed to deal with the finances?

your defending GRADY -F**CKIN- MCCALMON and calling someone else CROOKED? this guy raped summerville, THEN lafayette, and back to summerville again. riddle me this; did they ever find the "grant" money that paid for the king cotton train car? OR is it just 70K that the city lost due to this dirtbag?

Look, GM may not have always been the easiest person to work with or get along with, but he wasn't a crook. I also don't recall him ever having to plead the 5th when he was questioned about city business. Now, riddle me this; can the people who want to replace him say the same thing?

aaahshutup - How about doing just that?!? How can you ridicule a man who's just passed away?!? How about showing a little respect to him and his family?!? I for one know that Grady McCalmon was a fine, honest and upstanding gentleman who always did what was right even if it went against the popular vote. And yes, he could be demanding, but he expected everyone to do their job and do it to the best of their abitlity. Sounds like you may be a ex-employee which leads me to believe you weren't doing your job. SOOOOOOOO, shut up why don't you!!!

For those who have forgotten, and for those who wonder how this woman is still employed at the city. From the Chattanooga Press, Aug 31, 1994 http://news.google.com/newspapers... Defense attorney Vines called Keitha Shamblin as the first witness on behalf of Mrs. Evans. Mrs Shamblin serves as administrative assistant for the city of Summerville and is the daughter of Mayor Sewell Cash. As Vines began questioning Mrs. Shamblin, her attorney, Ralph Hill, advised her not to answer questions from Vines or VanPelt. Hill advised her to take the Fifth Amendment on all questions, including her name.

just because he dead doesn't mean he exempt from the cold hard facts. your saint isn't saintly. just because you liked him doesn't change the fact that he has forced employees to work double shifts to avoid filling the empty slots (to prevent paying benefits), or how he spent thousands of dollars on his pet projects while threatening the department heads with layoffs and refusing to pay overtime for work that had to be done. you may notice there isn't alot of folks jumping up to hold his flag, except you, pooooooor lonely moconnor.
