Now this is one quote that I can agree with. The county employees are struggling to pay this ridiculous health insurance premiums. This needs to be priority #1! Please Jason, we need you to address these important things.

i imagine the commish office is a bit different than the sheriffs office
changes will come slower and wont be as noticeable, unless the Summerville News has a slow news week and feels the need to report on them.
lets face it..the guy inherited one hell of a mess and it will take him a while to figure out where all the problems are and what can be done to fix them

since the last guy pretty much bankrupted the county with his pet project, there may not be any money to really do anything with.
the new guy inherited a load of trouble and no money to fix it with.
it will be just patchwork until the county comes up with the tax money or finds a bank foolish enough to loan them the money, or manages to get assistance from the federal or state goverments (ha ha not likely in this economy) to do anything really noticeable

I would like to know why William D. Patty Construction was hired to tear the two layers of asphalt off of the old bridge, while the county employees and equipment sat dormant those two days. WTF? Talk about a waste of money, the county has all these employees and equipment and they are not allowed or used to do a job as simple as that? Somebody needs to wake up and use the resources the county already has. Sounds like the hole is getting deeper to me. The new commissioner had better start paying attention, people are watching.

truth is with the county equipment sitting dormant and unused is , that who knows how long it has been since that equipment was serviced under the last guy, repaired, or if it even is in working condition?
and as far as the new guy having a job, it was my understanding that he owned and ran a business for several years, which would make him at least as qualified as mike dawson was, who was to the best of my knowledge a farmer before he was elected, and ralph kellet who was a auto parts salesman.while farming may be hard work, it doesnt qualify anyone to run a county. in politics qualifications have very little to do with if you get the job. it is if you are elected. myself, i wouldnt have wanted the commisioner job to begin with. it takes a pretty big man to come in behind some other man who screwed everything up and take responsibility to repair it. if he is crazy enough to take it on, i suppose we can at least give him enough time to work on it. if not, he can always be booted out of office the next election.

question i have is this, everyone wants all this progress , but no one wants their taxes raised.
first talk of tax increases and everyone goes crazy and says hell no. where is the money supposed to come from to do all this stuff? who's gonna pay for it?
the state? ha they cant even pay their own employees and have instituted mandatory furloughs.
the feds? they are too busy bailing out the big insurance companies and banks and corporations.
bottom line, any money to do anything around this county is coming out of the residents pockets, period.

The fact of the matter is that if this county wants to grow and prosper, taxes are going to have to be increased. I know no one wants to hear that, but its true. So everyone needs to make up their minds.

look at it this way i know harry powell was not the best at commissioner but at that time the county had 3 tractors to keep the roads mowed. at that time he kept them mowed. now we have who knows how many 10 to 12 maybe more. and can't get the job done.

The fact is that thanks to our last commissioner our taxes are going to have to go up, and probably go up dramatically. And it's going to be a long time before we get anything other than emergency infrastructure repairs and water lines.

You people who are so upset about everything should have been upset while that idiot Dawson was bankrupting us; it's too late now, and blaming the current commissioner is just wrong.

i imagine he had little choice but to keep the former commisioner on as a "paid consultant"
look at the condition kellet left the sheriffs office in....
there is no law that says a outgoing elected official has to turn over a tidy , ready to run office to his replacement.
he probably needed him around to advise him where all the county assets were, in what condition, and what stage of completion the various projects were.
would have been cheaper and less time consuming than wasting months trying to track it all down himself.
it hasnt been that long folks since winters took office.
for christ sakes, do you expect him to iron out every flaw the guy before him did in just 3 months, when the guy before had years to muck everything up?
and the ability to work hard does not qualify one to run a county, or a corporation. if it did then warehouse workers would run major corporations, maintenance workers would run hospitals instead of doctors or business school educated CEO's
it takes education, experience to run large entities, usually common sense...or you could just get elected and appointed
winters isnt a ideal candidate, but he is a damn sight better than a man that will ignore the consensus of a board he himself hired, just to get water line ran to his community, in the process bankrupting a county
dawson was arrogant and did whatever he wanted because he made quite a bit of money in the stock market years back and didnt need to be re elected,
and didnt care if he was. he wanted water ran to subligna and gore area, and he did not care what shape he left the county in in the process.

Mr. Dawson has also owned and operated a multi-million dollar logging operation his entire life and I hear he is quite a successful businessman and farmer.
