Everybody who drives a vehicle on California highways has surely experienced a careless bicycle rider. And it’s usually one of those idiots who wear spandex and a two tone top with numbers on it. They give the impression that they are in a bicycle marathon. They ride along busy streets and weave out in front of you without warning and they run through red traffic lights. Then they wonder why they are hit by a vehicle. The California Traffic law states that bicycles on public streets have the same rights and responsibilities as automobile and motorcycle drivers. Respect the right-of-way of bicyclists because they are entitled to share the road with other drivers.
It also states that bicycle riders ride as near to the curb or edge of roadway as practical.
Bicyclists should ride single file on a busy or narrow street.
Well, there it is. Bicycle riders should stay near the curb or edge of roadway as practical.
How many drivers have almost hit a bicyclist because he or she was either riding on the white line or weaving into your lane in front of you as you approached? I constantly see this type of riders riding on the white line so close to the traffic that it becomes dangerous. Many times I see this same type of riders ride side-by-side in a bicycle lane. This is illegal and unsafe.
Have you ever approached a bicycle rider(s) and they wobble into your lane as you carefully pass
using the next lane over. You honk to let them know that you are there and they flip you the finger.
I read and hear about bicyclists getting hit by a vehicle. And they always blame the driver of the vehicle. Either their spandex is too tight or their helmet is restricting the oxygen to their brain because when they get into their gear and climb onto the bike, it seems as if they leave their common sense for safety and respect for others behind.
I have seen riders who are dressed like they are professional riders become so angry with drivers who are sharing the roadway with them to the point where the rider cursed and screamed like an idiot.
Just because you have a bicycle that may have cost more than your vehicle and an expensive riding costume doesn’t automatically make you knowledgeable of the traffic laws regarding bicycling on a roadway. Whoever rides a bicycle on California roadways should be required to take a bicycle riding and safety test before being allowed to ride on a public roadway.
I respect a bicyclist more when I see that they are being careful as they ride along the side of the road and I notice that these types of riders aren’t wearing a clown costume. Bicyclist should show more respect to vehicles if they want to be respected.
Let’s face it. There are a lot of idiots driving automobiles and motorcycles that shouldn’t be and there are a lot of idiots who are riding bicycles who shouldn’t be
