I think those involved in trying to coordinate this "vigil" have wonderful intentions. It states this "vigil" is planned to honor the animals who have died there and also to raise awareness of the conditions in the facilities". As many have known for years, this isn't a new "condition". With what we have seen in the form of a so-called raid, only to have it result in allowing the abusers loose to continue their "work", I think it will take far more than a "vigil" to get action. Afterall, the phtotos we have just witnessed were seen during the "raid" and before the abusers were allowed back on the job.

Bombard AC Wharton with e-mails. His e-mail address is ac.wharton@memphistn.gov. If there is enough of an outcry something will be done.

I thought this was supposed to be a "shelter". These pictures of the starved dogs make me sick. How can you accidently starve a dog? I now have 11 dogs because I took a mother dog and her 3 puppies home from Third and Mallory in Memphis--and I live in Mississippi. Suppose I had taken them to the "shelter". Where wouild they be now? I have had them spayed (all were females) at my expense and I am a senior citizen who really can't afford this. But I can't stand to see animals mistreated. Too bad the very people who are getting almost a $100K per year can't feel the same way--when that is their job--to see that the animals are cared for. SAD--SAD--SAD!

I've known how bad it is for a while. I got a dog from there in April of 2008, and was told the dog was healthy. Within 10 days, I had to put the dog down because it had distemper. I contacted the shelter to try and get at least a refund on my adoption fees, if not to cover the over $500.00 I spent on the dog. I trying to get an answer several times, but could never get hold of anyone who could make a decision.

I wish the people who did this to these animals would also be starved. What kind of person could do this to these poor helpless animals. It's wrong and just plain CRUEL!!!!! These people do not need to have jobs and the animal shelter needs to be a little wiser on who they hire!

ALL OF THE EMPLOYEES & THE ONE APPOINTED TO OVERSEE THESE ANIMALS, SHOULD BE DEPRIVED OF FOOD & WATER FOR 3 TO 4 DAYS JUST LIKE THESE DOGS WERE, SO THEY CAN SEE WHAT IT IS LIKE!!!!!! NONE OF THE SAME EMPLOYESS SHOULD EVER BE ALLOWED TO COME BACK AFTER WHAT THEY DID.

As an animal rescuer and advocate, I find the situation in the southern states to be so far behind the northern areas - do the yankees have to come down and show y'all how to run a shelter!!
There are tons of good people in the south constantly trying to change things - work with them!!! Get your spay/neuter clinics going - CITY OFFICIALS - get on board here and make a difference in your communities!

comments from a TN contact:
When this first hit ( I think last week) I sent the article to our county Mayor since the Memphis Mayor was disgusted with what was happening. Our Mayor says give the AC's a carton of bullets and then we'll have animal control.
We have a lot we're fighting...

MY RESPONSE TO THIS _ the mayor is no better than the tribal leaders on reservations who round them up once a yr and shoot them! and yes, we are fighting those regulations and winning - so look out southern Mayors who agree that this is the way to go - you are next!

I was shocked when I saw picture #3 of the cute puppy that was starved to death! That is pathetic and any human being that could go to that place every day and have no sympathy certainly does not need to work there! Put someone in charge that gives a damn!

We can no longer excuse the abuse of those unable to defend themselves. I am referring to children and animals. In this country and especially in Memphis, people want to excuse those responsible as being poor, uneducated and, most of the time, because they are a minority. This just won't wash any longer. The education is there for the taking and the majority of it is FREE....Start showing the ignorant monsters what the consequences are for their actions. Babies and innocent animals are beaten, burned, starved and killed hourly. Instead of keeping the same abusers at the shelter hire some of the thousands of unemployed in Memphis. There is just no excuse for this tragedy. Prosecute all involved and starve them before you do!

I'd like to have just 5 minutes alone in a room with any one of those pieces of trash that supposedly "cared for" these animals. Then I would like to put one of them in a cage and starve them.
