Settlement to the Kelsey Briggs wrongful death case

Full story: KFOR

It's hard to believe it's been nearly four years since the death of Kelsey Smith-Briggs. Her father says it's hard to believe Kelsey's mother might be rewarded in a settlement.

I think Raye Dawn should not get any money at all , any mother can tell when something is not right with their child. That poor child had so many bad things that happen to her and so many problems and they all took place in her home, also what about Micheal lee Porter's daughter what she saw her father do to Kelsey???? If a little girl new something was wrong then the mother bloody well did to. Also I've been thinking it was never mentioned before but Raye was pregnant with his child. What if that's why what happen to kelsey happend in the first place?

This mother should not be allowed to profit.

To give her anything would be an injustice.

If she profits at all, this sets a horrible example for other abusive and or enabler parents to profit off of their crimes.

After viewing the video and reading the articles. I am truly sorry for your loss. Raye Dawn should not receive anything. You must make sure the law is changed.

A lot of people lecture Lance Briggs because he brought suit against the DHS. How else do you make them accountable? Look at how many children died under their watch. It's time to stop naming laws after dead children. They need to make the laws and enforce them BEFORE the child dies.

Just hope Lance (who showed up for soooo many court hearings regarding Kelsey being abused {NOT}) is planning on donating all of that money to a charity for the prevention of child abuse.

and pretty sure the State of Oklahoma doesn't pay Felons who are sitting in prison. If so, then Lances attorney really dropped the ball on that one (or he had a CRAPPY attorney).

Are you really one of those people who believes that the Briggs run the entire state of Oklahoma, oh complete lack of common sense?

What has the Smith family done to make a difference, besides pay off the Observer? There is a law in Kelsey's name, reforming the DHS, because of the Briggs family. And you lecture people about "hating" Raye? People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, oh complete lack of common sense.

There may be no way to prevent this pitiful excuse for a mother to receive part of this settlement, however, there may be a legal avenue to force her to either donate the entire amount to a charity or to use the entire amount to set up perhaps foundation in Kelsey's name to provide education, intervention, parenting classes, ect for family's, parents, grandparents, children that could prevent child abuse or an endowment fund at OU that would fund someone who is seeking a social work degree......or set up training for the CPS(child protective services) section of the Oklahoma DHS to better train those that are supposed to provide interventions in family's where abuse is a potential issue or an ongoing issue, perhaps fund foster care programs for those children and babies that are removed from abusive situations are going to safe homes......that sorry excuse for a mother should never be allowed to touch one dime of that money, she should do without any luxuries while in prison and not have money available to start a new life when she is released, thats called a second chance, something little Kelsey wasn't given, nor should the grandparents be able to touch it, so many people failed this beautiful child......and perhaps the daddy should do something positive with his portion, I believe no one should be able to use it personally....it should be donated or used in another way......that goes for the attorneys as well!!!

explain your comment please. What does that have to do with anything? What I am saying is if Raye is really going to be getting some settlement money, after being convicted of enabling child abuse, then the attorney should have filed a motion to prevent that from happening. Either that or the state of Oklahoma needs to change those laws that allow that. What a GREAT get-rich-quick scheme Oklahoma is promoting here! Let's just all go out and commit a crime so that we can sit in prison and hope to bank several thousand. That way, when we get out, we'll have a fatter bank account than we could have ever hoped for before. Oklahoma is dumber than a box of rocks. It's also the garbage can of the U.S. When you cross over the state line, into Texas it's like Dorothy opening the door from Auntie Em's house. Texas being the beautiful, colored side of course.

Don't faint, but I agree with a lot that you say. I originally thought that the Son of Sam law that prevented criminals from profiting for their crimes was true in all 50 states. I was wrong. I also have a really low opinion of the legal system in Oklahoma. There are good people in that system, don't get me wrong. But the idiots outweight the good. I also think that the entire DHS system should be thrown in jail. Have you read about the Ryan Luke case? Horrifying.

I have to admit that you are a welcome change from Sue, even with your hostility. I will even go as far as to admit that I can be hostile, because of the horror that I believe Raye perpetrated on Kelsey. It's refreshing to discuss things with someone capable of thought from the "other side."

I'm not lecturing anyone about "hating Raye".. I hate her as well but I can also see past that and see that it was not Raye that abused or killed Kelsey, it was Porter. I hate Raye for not being as good enough protector. Kelsey needed her to protect her and she fatally failed Kelsey. Raye will have to live with that for the rest of her life and I wouldn't want to be her, that's for sure.

I don't think anyone should receive $ for a childs death. The money should go to organizations like CASA, Guardian Ad Litem so they can help protect other children from abuse. Most women Like Dawn are drawn to men like Porter and Briggs that abuse their victims and those the victims love. If you look at Briggs past he should be doing time for abuse on Dawn and other women. They are bullies.

Colleen, it was CASA and the guardian ad litem that failed Kelsey. I hope the Briggs family tears them down brick by brick. I surely would.

Daily Horoscope for December 30

Scorpio

If you've been surrounded by people during the past few days you welcome the chance to have some time to yourself today. It's a wonderful excuse to do something really indulgent in private, such as scoff a whole box of chocolates while watching a favourite film on TV. But make sure you destroy all the evidence before everyone else comes home!
