Dan - What traffic improvements are being added to MacArthur Road in response to the new Lifestyle Center and is more parking being provided in lieu of what was removed?? All of that development will certainly have a major impact on MacArthur Road and Route 22, but I have not seen one iota of improvements construction?? I agree with the fellow qouted in your article that there should be a moratorium on new development until MacArthur Road is fixed.

It will be interesting to see the effects of the holiday traffic soon to start! Since I live right off MacArthur, I make sure I do all my errands before 11 am on the weekends and then stay inside the rest of the day - it's horrible on the road!

I know what you mean. We have a similar problem all summer long with the Dorney traffic. This is especially true when traffic backs onto Rt78, and the local police attempt to solve that by re-routing Dorney traffic down Hamilton, to the bypass road just past the Dunkin Donuts shop, and back down the other side of Hamilton. Dorneyville area traffic just locks up at that point. We just have to stay in our houses and wait it out. |

MacArthur Road is one huge reason I do not do any shopping at the LV Mall anymore.(Crime is the other reason.)
Any business that locates itself along this crummy strip of traffic jams and irate, aggressive, road-raged drivers will not see my business. It's a shame, since I love to shop!! But the traffic is just too horrendeous to bear. I'll be taking the 309 down to the Promenade, or (better yet) visiting my friendly internet shopping sights. |

With the exception of the mentioned mechanicsville rd area, I think MacArthur Rd is one of the better engineered roads in the Valley. It handles a lot of traffic very effieciently. I lived there for years. It is congested during the holidays, but otherwise it moves quite well.
Well, if all these jerks from NY and North NJ would stop moving here we wouldn't have this problem. And traffic is the least of our problems. Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton and all the little townships is the L.V. are being overrun with NY/NJ trash. Get rid of that and the problems will go away.

Amen to that Joe! They claim that they are bringing "culture" "economic prosperity" and new business to our area. Well, if traffic nightmares are the price we have to pay for it, they can keep it! We were much better off before they came here.
I made my first trip to MacArthur road Saturday for in about a year, and it was terrible. I swear it was like black friday, and not a Saturday in October. You won't see me driving up there again anytime soon. Fortunately, I usually do my shopping in Quakertown. |
....But 309 in Quakertown is not too far behind MacArthur Road, and will probably be just as bad in a few years.
You hit it right on the head, my friend. How many more "mattress outlets" can you possibly have on one stretch of road? Like another post said - it's best to shop early or you'll need to prepare yourself for MANY traffic nightmares. |

Lehigh Valley Mall lost my $$$ awhile ago. I cannot see having to sit through 2 traffic light changes just to CROSS OVER MacArthur Rd. Check out the NJ/NY plates that block
the intersection and run the red lights. After Lowes opens I will no longer travel in that direction. That entire shopping area will now lose my $$$. Whitehall was once a nice place to raise children, now it has become an extension of the cesspool of Allentown. |
Whitehall Township needs to have actual rules that they follow. Instead they make up the rules and bend them for certain people, as they go along. I am not surprised at all! Whitehall's new motto, "build first then plan later!"
What about the MESS at Schadt Avenue...still!?!? Any plans to fix that? I used to shop in Whitehall a lot, but now cringe at the thought of just passing through...I avoid the area as much as possible. And like MonkeyMama, I do most of my shopping on-line, get really great deals, plus free shipping!

Now you understand why so many construction company employees are contributing to the Dan McNeill write in reelection nightmare??? |

MacArthur Road is a tribute to all of the head up their butts planners of yesteryear in Whitehall...
I travel around the US and Canada... a lot. Rarely do I see such a poorly planned shopping district as I do with the disaster that is MacArthur Road. Now we have a so-called Promenade shop knockoff with nowhere near enough parking in the inner parking lot and it isn't even the Holidays yet! WTF! Concrete, Macadam, litter, with literally no trees or softscaping to break up the monotony. Those in charge continue to put lipstick on the pig. Then we have the wonderful interchange at Route 22 and MacArthur Rd. The one that causes back up all the way west to Route 309... and east to Route 191... Who the Hell is in charge? I keep forgetting...PennDOT, the model for lard butted patronage...this area has bee literally begging for improvement for at least the last 25 years... |

MacArthur Rd is a mess, and so is 22. In ten years, at the rate we're going, the old Lehigh Valley Thruway (started in '54) will be extinct. Whatever happened to the plan to get rid of all tractor trailers going through the Valley on US 22? Local deliveries only is the way to go. If the I-80 tolls go through as planned, 22 will get worse as 53 footers will be scrambling to use the free roads 22 and I-78. As for north 145, I hate the underpass for Lehigh Street and they should just change the left lane into a left turn only for the winter. Most of the people turning left onto Mechanicsville are usually for the high school. A grander idea is change the 4 light signal to a 5 and allow a righ turn signal on both 145 south and Mechanicsville east to 145.

My husband and I drove into that lifestyle center lot about two weeks ago (before they even had the "grand" opening) just to look around. We almost got hit twice! That parking lot was horribly planned! I have no intention of going back there anytime soon, or to the contrived Promenade shops either! |
We were there on Apple opening day and again twice on Saturday in the pouring rain. Both times we easily parked right along the drive on the Rte 22 side and walked over into the shopping area. Trying to get right in between the stores in that lot would probably be a waste of time.

Agreed! eBay rocks!:) |

Yeah well, I live here and almost never use 309 except to cross from one side of town to the other. PennDOT lost a chance years ago to either widen it to six lanes or put in a real by-pass west of town. Now the development makes doing anything nearly impossible. Furthermore, Q-town and Richland Twp. were supposed to spend a quarter-million to synchronize all the lights from Tollgate Road north to Pumping Station Rd by the new Target. What happened? That plan was announced years ago. |
