Surgeons implant tooth into woman's eye to restore her vision

Full story: www.cnn.com

To start the procedure, surgeons remove a healthy tooth and part of the patient's jawbone. The tooth and bone were then shaved and sculpted, and a hole was drilled into them to hold the prosthetic lens. Then the whole unit was implanted into Thornton's chest and left for several months, allowing the tooth and lens to bond. This was then implanted into her eye.

Now she blinks with a lisp and has to brush and floss her eye twice a day.

This is the second time this type of surgery has made it to Offbeat. The last time, it was a guy who had the surgery. I believe he was the victim of a fire or explosion. His left eye was so damaged it had to be removed. His right eye was quite scarred and the lens was destroyed. So the doctor did this procedure on him, just like on this woman.

What I don't understand, why does it have to be a tooth? I know we have all heard about eye teeth, but why couldn't it have been a piece of rib? The ribs regenerate, so a half inch piece of rib or so would never really be missed.

Wow, that surgery sounds cool.
If I were blind, I would give my eye teeth to get it.

I’ve heard of this. Now down south here people have so few teeth you’d think they have 22 eyes. But no, none at all have 22 eyes.

On the flip side, would they be able to get this procedure? If they don't have a suitable tooth to use, then this won't work. In addition, some of the jawbone would need to be taken with it, and this needs to be a living tooth.

With eye donors being common, and pig parts working as well as human parts (anytime anyone here butchers a pig they can call a surgical team from the local trauma center to do a collection), I can't even imagine why it is necessary at all.

That still doesn't say much. If a tooth can do that, why not a bone? A hole can be drilled into live bone medium, and it should be able to graft. I understand the tooth vs. plastic argument. Whatever it is would need to become rooted into the eye and stable. Plastic would be too smooth and could move. Other materials could cause immune complications. So it makes sense that something from the patient be used in the patient. But still, I don't really see why bone could not be used if it will graft. They may have to transplant some of the periosteum (sp?) as well.

Here is a better, more complete article on the man who we read about earlier. It still does not state the exact reason for the tooth, but I am wondering if it is an easier surgery. With some dental treatments, bone is taken from the hip area but then you have to heal from that surgery. It would certainly be easier to remove a tooth than to do a great many things....
