What Tylertown, Mississippi Needs

Tylertown is a wonderful and peaceful place to live. That is if your 80. Young people need more things to do.and more intrest in their lives. All I am saying is that we need more job opportunities and more attractive ways to get young people out of sonics parking lot.For example lets build a Walmart,or some new restaurants. I personally am sick and tired of mcdonalds and sonic.I think everyone will agree on this message. Let's make Tylertown, Mississippi a better place for everyone.

Jesse I for one agree with you compleatly we do need more stuff to do in tylertown, like a game room or more restaurants or something
where we won't get run off for making too much noise or having a radio too loud I like the idea of getting something for us in town
to do.

more shopping places. Something for the kids to have fun on the weekend to do. Besides the park in town. I have faith that we will have a lot more in Tylertown, Ms to do.

need to get a new mayor, judges, shool superintendent and the peoples that want it to stay the same. get people in the right places starting with jobs, retails stores,entertaintment, acholic sales, and something for the young kids to keep them postive. the schools should come together as one on all fronts, proms, sports, & educational. club 18 an younger with school id, skating ring, bowling alley,rec. center

Definately agree with you also, Jesse. I have three teens who have nothing to do on weekends. A movie theatre, game room or just a drive-inn where the teens would be allowed to "hang out" without getting into trouble are great ideas. I see no problem with any of that as long as there isn't fighting or drinking, and in that case the teens would have to leave. Now if we could just find someone who has the means for funding an idea like this.

What Tylertown Ms. needs is a BIG friggin explosion!

Tytertown needs a whole new face. The state of Mississippi needs a new make over. I am from Tylertown and moved away years ago. I thank my god and mom for that. There has got to be company's that would want to come to that city, but I think a lot has to do with the elected government officials and the local officials. Here it is 2007 what schools do you know of besides Mississippi that have seperate proms! That should tell you that we have the wrong officials and teachers in our school systems. This along with others is very unattractive for the state. I vote for a change!

Why doesn't anyone care about the abuse, neglect and torture of those
children at the Columbia Mississippi Training School? Don't we know that
those children are going to grow up and be apart of our society? I don't
know about you guys but I would like to get those children the care and help that they need now rather than later. If those children don't get the care to deal with the abuse, neglect and torture that they endured
now, I don't think we are going to be ready to deal with it later. When
the children start to express the aggression and anger that will be shown
to many unsuspecting Innocent people that don't know what is going on, "Mississippi is going to have hell on their hands", and then the State of Mississippi is going to be trying to give these children the death
penalty which is lethal injection.

I used to live in Tylertown and also use to work at Sonics. The kids definitely need something more to do and Tylertown should have more of a variety of hang out spots for the kids. However, it is not just up to the town, but up to the parents as well. The parents should be able to create a place for children to dwell and stay out of trouble. Create boys and girls step teams, dance teams, softball teams...let the children get involved in things that will teach them discipline and we won't have to worry about them ending up at the Columbia Training School. The children only have us to look at so, it is up to us to save them and keep them busy.

What Tylertown needs is people who care for others and not just themselves and their own family. It defenitely needs a place for kids to go such as a skating rink etc., New restaurants would be good but the people here would put them out of business unless the owners are from here. So, like I said it needs unselfish people who can see further than the noses on their face. Oh and it needs real christians not the ones who go to church to keep up appearances or out of tradition.

I just recently moved to Tylertown, and am accustomed to getting out of bed around 11:00 a.m. on Saturdays. I was shocked to see the whole town shut down at 12:00 on Saturdays with nothing to do. It would be good to have big companies like Walmart, a Major Drug Store chain, Circuit City, Verizon, Winn Dixie, and some major governmental agency come to Tylertown. It would bring in good revenue for the community. I thought about opening a skate rink, with the building also being able to house dressy upscalse parties, but was discouraged by longtime residents of the community. If there is something the politicians want to get done, they can post signs and let people know and I will be sure to jump in and put my money in the community. Otherwise, I purchase my items elsewhere.

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who stated there opinions on this situation. Uncertain whether Tylertown,MS will ever grow, but maybe changes will come in the future. To be honest with you I plan to move to Hattiesburg, MS ,now thats a city with potential. There is nothing here for me except an amazing Tylertown Cheif football team !!! GO CHEIFS !also congradulations to the class of 2008 seniors !!!!!

It's a crime this is 07 & there are those who hate others because of color. I grew up in MS & if it wasn't for my, I would have been given bad grades. MS is a joke & the US allows the state to run as everything is ok. I have news for you, we aren't going anywhere. We are protected from those who hate. Don't you know that in order for you to love God whom you can't see, you must love those around you, yes black people, love us FIRST before you will enter into Heaven....kind of scary....your hate for us will keep you from Heaven...something to think about.

I agree totally. I have been here 9 years. The biggest problem is that the town council doesn't want any big business here. They are afraid that it will put the small hometown business owner's out of business. Most of them don't do much in the way of sales anyway.
No one will hire teens accept for Sonic and the grocery stores will hire a few during the summer. Other than that, they are pretty much out of luck.

I have lived all over this country, and have family in Tylertown whom I visit regularly. The problem you need to solve is one of expansion and upgrade of economy, while not forfeiting your way of life to the big corporations such as Wal-Mart. In other successful rural towns that I have seen, the people celebrate their culture, and preserve it by making that celebration a focal point of their economy. It would be a good thing to open an institute of higher education also. Publish the Tylertown Cookbook. Get distribution, and be known for something. Find your history, and hold regular festivals or events, which will attract outsiders. Looking at the Tylertown demographic online, I see it is about half Irish/Scottish, and about half Black, with some Native American mixed in. These ethnic groups each brought a lot of tradition and customs to the area, which became uniquely defined as Southwest Mississippi over time. Emphasize the music, food, and traditions of your culture, and do something with it that brings in the public from elsewhere. Celtic festivals for example, with music, food and highland games tend to draw large crowds and bring lots of business to the area in which they are held. I don’t like to have to say it, but the only way to preserve a culture anymore these days is to make it valuable to someone else. Eventually, our grandparents pass on, and the way of life is diluted just a little more with each generation gone. From the looks of it everywhere else in the country, you will either preserve your way of life actively, or the likes of Wal-Mart and Starbucks will steal your lunch and sell it back to you. Service economies tend to expand and make an area ugly. Just a few thoughts to throw out there.

Well, there is a well-founded reason why a local government wouldn't really like to have a Walmart in their town... just try to find out why more than 200 other cities have turned their backs on that corporation. Walmart is a vicious and disgusting corporation that has put thousands of small business owners out of business in countless cities of the US, by offering cheap products made with cheap labor overseas. If you have a basic understanding of micro-economics you would realize why any small city shouldn't have Walmart around.

Now, about your city. I haven't been to Tylertown yet, but my wife is from there... and surely as hell she was happy to leave from there. Don't expect external investment from outside companies because those companies usually hurt the town's economy in the long run. What is needed is better opportunities for small businesses to open. Those would give the opportunity to grow steadily.

Yes please! I love Tylertown with all my heart and soul. My family started the town and it should continue to thrive. Though I'm currently living out west, publishing the Tylertown cookbook would be a great start. I myself would love an updated book and there's plenty of people out here highly interested in cracklins, chicken dumplings(my great grandma's), and pecan pie. Where REAL Southern cooking can finally smack down these fake cooks like Bobby Flay and his "Chipotle chile sweet potatos".(?what that ain't Southern!)
In addition, more community activities would be great. Tylertown is a historical and beautiful place that shouldn't be known for 'the Sonic down the street'. More festivals and get-togethers should be made to bring neighbors together, like something pertaining to food. Food has been the largest part in my family for generations, and I bet food fests/competitions would bring people out. And hopefully, like the county fair, festivals might bring other people to the "Cream Pitcher of Mississippi". Thus getting people younger than 80 to move out there and hopefully start a few recreational businesses of their own.
