Bill would make it illegal to put false info in caller-ID

spoofing 911 calls? hardly, 911 uses a separate system called ANI to determine caller info, this system cannot be spoofed because ANI uses out of band signalling. caller-id uses tones sent between the first and second rings to announce who's calling. these tones can be easily replicated or spoofed using just your home computer, no need to pay anyone. it's time everyone gets access to ANI info, not just 911 and the phone company.

I fully agree, if someone cannot be honest about who they are they do not need to be talking to me that is for sure.

Here's another example of how legislators are going after the symptom (in this case technology) rather than the root cause. Arrest individuals who do in fact mis-use this technology to commit crimes. But why penalize honest citizens from making use of technology. I can thing of a number of reasons why I would like to enhance or ammend my callerid information depending on the friend/familly member I am calling, as opposed to disguise or commit fraud. However, it appears those who wrote this bill can only see malice and ill will.

Oh geez. Hope Zeke from Canada doesn't see your comment. He feels we lock up too many people for insufficiant reasons and that's why America is the laughing stock of the world.

I do not answer my phone for private numbers, 800#s without a name with it, sometimes even with a name on it, and calls that come in with no information at all.

Maybe by more doing this, they will get the message that hiding won't work.

I flat out tell those I deal with that if they need to get ahold of me and are using a private or blocked number do not be surprised if I do not answer and to make it a matter of record that I do not answer such calls.

Florida has become the American version of Nigeria -- home of scammers. I'm in Utah, and when I see a Florida number on my caller ID I just don't even pick up the phone any more.

this should be an FCC law issue, made within the telephone company's internal switching system. If a customer programs their phone other than who they really are, the phone ain't gonna work.
THAT SHOULD BE THE LAW OF PHONE USE.

The phone should show caller ID, with who the phone is registered to, no matter what.
